Fish everybody should keep atleast once in their lifetime?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I saw them the other day at my lfs. I was almost ready to start a reef tank when I saw them, since one of my best friends is trying to get me into it. Then I saw they were $125 each for 4-5” specimens, and I suddenly remembered why I don’t look too closely at the reef sections.
I saw a group of 100 for $125

For a monster fish keeper I'd say the must haves are: jag /Cuban cichlid, bluegill, spotted gar and oscar.

For beginners: killifish, hardy barbs such as cherry barbs, white clouds, guppies

For a monster fish keeper I'd say a parachromis cichlid (maganeuse, dovii, Aztec, jaguar, etc.), some sort of arowana, some sort of large catfish, and some sort of bass

big fish:
Uaru Amphiacanthoides
Vieja Argentea
Any Potamotrygon

more manageable:
Boesemani Rainbows
Congo tetras
Dwarf pikes (crenicichla)

i agree, i owned goldfish as a child but never knew much which unfortunately lead to their early demise :(
i haven't owned any fish since then as i am afraid i'm just not ready for it yet. I've researched and have some friends that are really great keepers that answer my every question, but i dont know if its time yet. They are just like any other animal and deserve a happy, and comfortable life
My offer for a free tank still stands when you're ready. ;)

You know the mistakes you made last time, meaning you're less likely to make them again.. Plus me and everyone here would be more than happy to help with appropriate stocking, maintenance tips, etc. :D
