Fish everybody should keep atleast once in their lifetime?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I guess if we are talking about everybody as in all people then we'd be looking at bettas, guppies, small tetras, that kinda thing.
But if we are talking about everybody as in all people who are serious about fish keeping, I'd say Oscars, Peacocks, Polypterus, Dwarf Shrimp, Nano community fish, Arowanas, and anything that you see that you've never heard of before but are willing to put in the time and effort to learn about.

I would have to cast my vote for the infamous Convict cichlid.

With convicts a person can learn the general social behavior of cichlids. Are small enought not to need a huge tank. Can go more advanced with creating a harem, or colony in a bigger tank. Very hardy fish all around, small enought that can house other fish with it with little issues.

Axolotl are not fish lol.

As I've had many fish dumped on me by irresponsible owners over the yrs, I can't think of a single species that EVERYONE should keep... Some people shouldn't keep any lol.

But a comon goldfish is a good fish to learn on in IMHO. It is inexpensive to purchase but has enough that can go wrong with it to really make a beginer hone their keeping skills.

I must say tho that all the yrs I passed up keeping Oscars was goof on my part. As much as I love my usual favorites, nothing has compared to keeping these jerks lol.

i agree, i owned goldfish as a child but never knew much which unfortunately lead to their early demise :(
i haven't owned any fish since then as i am afraid i'm just not ready for it yet. I've researched and have some friends that are really great keepers that answer my every question, but i dont know if its time yet. They are just like any other animal and deserve a happy, and comfortable life

Welcome to the forum! All of us start some where and without the mistakes we've made, we dont grow. Honor the lives sacraficed to ignorance with greater care and wisdom for the next. You already have a great foundation to be a wonderful keeper... Compassion.
