Fish for 120 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You say you want a easy to maintain setup?
But you seem to want as many fish as possible...

What do you have for filtration?
What do ya want to do in the way of maintenance, weekly, twice-a-week water changes, monthly or twice-a-month filter cleaning?
Do you have time to monitor daily for aggression/territorial issues?

If your a student busy with studies and partying then I'd suggest a light stocking.
Pick one large or two medium cichlids and a lone Pleco or Cat and perhaps a few (5-7)dither/target fish like some Giant Danios.

haha. wow. I'm actually wondering if some of you can read.
This is FOR a college class. Myself and my professor, an ichthyologist actually, will be caring for the tank, which will be situated in a class room.

Wonder...I'm really apprecitating your tank. That H pearsei is soo beautiful. I have to add that to my stock, such a gorgeous center piece.

H pearsei
Heros severus
Pim Pictus
Pleco [royal or sailfin]

then i have to decide between

rainbow cichlid
OR
sajica

haha. then i can maybe knock the list down more lol

Thanks much!

You may want to consider one of these, in lieu of the H. pearsei.

H. bocourti

VERY similar disposition only doesn't get quite as large.

Yes, I think everyone here can most likley read quite well, but some may just come for the pics :screwy:
Perhaps you need to provide more accurate information about your endeavor before you start acting like a smartass towards those trying to help you.

Your initial post nor any of the others in this thread, mention this as a in class project, that you'll have help from your professor/ichthyologist.
All it states is that it is a project, not where or with whom.

Did your other thread mention these? No link and I didn't go looking for it...

On a side note...
Too many ichthyologist know alot about fish, but haven't a clue to good fish/tank keeping.

Alrighty, well heres whats up.
I'm setting up a 120 gallon for my BIO majors project.
I want to do a SA/CA tank.
Complete with cichlids and bottom feeders.

This will be the fish's permament home and they must be low-maintance.
The tank has a UFG, lights, gravel, plants, decor and some other stuff.
I have a onetime fund of 250 dollars at my LFS so i must know what i want.
Hmmmmmm... No mention of classroom or a professor.
Yeah, so it's "FOR" a college class... So?...
It's irrevelant to stocking, filtration and maintenance considerations.
If you want/need low maintenance then you need to lightly-moderately stock the tank.

Is the UGF all you have for filtration?
I can think of many issues that could arise from the use of only a UGF, primarily...
Cichlids like to dig, one good dig and your UGF is practically useless.
I see no questions pertaining to proper filtration for a cichlid tank, so I thought to bring the subject up.

.

I agree.. The UGF will most likely just look good, and not for long :( Better to go with air bars for the bubble look :) even with a Power head attached to the UGF... Water seeks the easiest route of escape and that will be the areas where your fish dig closer or all the way to the filter plate..

:topic: Sorry off topic... Still thought it is of importance:)

But anyway I like the list and never owned either of the two rainbow or the Sjica.. Though with all the color you are going to have already, my personal opinion would be to go with the Sjica as an ordinary, less colored fish will set off the colors in your other choices :) The Pictus will help still another less colorful mate running around will help :)

Sounds like someone has been eating habaneros instead of anaheims?:WHOA:

Excellent Filtration is a MUST with any cichlids, but "Over filtration" is paramount with a fish like a H. pearsei. They can dump like a small hippo. In fact my smaller fish are careful to not feed under him at feeding time! A few have gotten :barf: instead of bloodworms!!! I have a Cascade 1500 canister, an Emperor 400 dual bio-wheel, and a 901 Powerhead attached to an UGF on my 150gal and it works Great. Bi-weekly Water changes of 40%.

ha ehhh.

It's not like a regular UGF.
It's more like eggcrate err something.
Its very durable.
I think I'll have 2 901 powerheads on there.
I was also planning on getting a canister filter or a bio wheel.

so what amount of fish should and be looking at?
and which ones?

I had a 120g with a canister filter and an emperor 400, and that didn't seem like enough filtration... but then again I did have 3 9in + oscars pooping 24-7...
