Fish illness'

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have found that a good UV helps alot (although half the people on here will say it is useless).

Yeah had that argument on here already, lol. All academic study suggest it does AMAZING things for aquarium health when done right and still has benefits when not optimally setup. I have designs for a QT setup that I'll get up and running in a couple months that will be centered around UV filtration.

Thanks for laying out the treatment for me. I'm pretty scatter brained ATM, been obsessing over this ever more each day since the last fish bought the farm. I will do as you say!

Make sure your water params are in check. Shotgun: metro in food. levamisole or flubendazole for deworming. water changes water changes water changes...... and water changes.

so for the flubendazole would I put that in the food or in the water??? I'm assuming food. And I'd echo that question of do you know a good outlet, online or off that I could get flubendazole, and or levamisole? Do you know off hand the dosing for these meds??? I don't remember what I was using even for the metro, was over a month ago.

Joe, I have all these meds. If you are in southern california, I can give them to you for free. It is administered in the water column.....the way it is introduced into the fish is a bit different than antibiotics. I had the unfortunate luck to get "free" diseased fish about 2 years ago. Of course, I did not know this until I noticed worms sticking out of my fishes ass.....and flesh eating bacteria eating away at my fish.... I never posted this on MFK but it was really tough times for me.....ever since then I have quarantine tanks, and am very careful of the source....and have 8 tanks running disease free since then..... so I have meds that I never plan on using again (knock on wood). pm me so I can send you my number.

I'm kinda in the midwest, if you mail em to me I'll pay for shipping through pay pal otherwise if you can recommend a spot online to find stuff. I was looking around and levamisole I can find here as Levamisole Hydrochloride:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Prohibit-Le...ltDomain_0&hash=item1c206f32f6#ht_1509wt_1139

Flubendazole I can't find anywhere online for some reason, amazon and ebay are putting up nothing, I can get uranium but not Flubendazole, google shopping also is a blank. Does it have another alias?

Metro I can find no prob, got two bottles already. I have solar salt and copper safe it you think either or these would have impact on the parasites you suspect let me know I'll drop it in.

do not use copper safe. I don't suspect parasites. Never said this. I don't know what solar salt is. I only use aquarium salt if ever used. I got both flu/lev from this guy. He is an older gentlemen who is a pleasure to deal with. He will recommend only one, not both.... although he sells both. He takes paypal.

SO,............ WHAT ARE YOUR WATER PARAMETERS?

At work will get a testing kit on the way home and post parameters, for tap and tanks (before water change) and some pics of the affected fish, last night the juevie red empress started to show some external signs of whatever. Any thoughts on Praziquantel??? I just see its another popular med and figure you know allot about this so I'd ask. It is said to be the only freshwater treatement for flat worm(don't know how legit that is):

http://thegab.org/Illness-and-Treatment/medicated-food-explained-and-explored.html

Do you have any better more accurate compilation of meds and food meds you could recommend. I'm gonna try and make a index of stuff for the next time so I can quickly look stuff up.

Prazi is a "mild" med that works for external/internal parasites. Particularly helpful for gill flukes which is usually accompanied by flashing, and/or heavy breathing, and the flukes can at time be seen hanging out of the gills. Some people use prazi as a preventive med against parasites for newly acquired WC specimens.

I believe there are several threads/stickies here on MFK describing a lot of the most common meds. There are other good lists on the web as well.

More information is needed. Water params. Fish behavior? What are these external signs? Pictures. I feel I am doing you a dis-service by describing these meds as we should be trying to find the source of the problem and move from a shotgun approach to at least an educated guess approach.

Just got home from work. I want to feed them a metro mix prior to moving them. What do you think is a good mix I seriously can't find a ration on the internet all I got is how to make from scratch and I don't have the time to do that tonight and move the fish as well. If no one responds I'm going to do the same ratio as I do for the epsom salt. 3% 2 cup of water and 1 table spoon metro+.

This is a cut & paste from an online article:

Dosage in food

• Mixing
The mixing of medicated food is of vital importance - the preferred method is to mortar and pestle the tablet, 'grind it with the end of a wooden rolling pin; then roll out the food, on some grease proof paper, so that it is thin and flat. Then sprinkle the powder thinly and evenly over the food and knead it in. The mix is then rolled up and placed into mixing bowel where it is very carefully mixed so that an even distribution of the drug is assured.
• Dosage
□ The preferred dose is (Francis-Floyd & Reed, 1994; Yeng, 2001) i.e. 1gm of metronidazole to 100gm of Fred's beef heart mix or similar.
□ Again I have increased this dose considerably where warranted When preparing a medicated mix, it is important to use appropriate amounts as there is a life expectancy once the drug has been added to the food.
□ The medicated food, if stored should be frozen
• Feeding the medicated food
□ Some suggest that normal feeding 3x day for 3 days is the best way. A recommended alternative is small portions throughout the day, ensuring that all of the food is eaten i.e. it should not remain on the bottom after a minute or two. This can continue for up to 10 days

Ok, well that is a dramatically more involved process than I had time for. I thought you could do the epsom salt thing and blend with water then float pellets. :P

At any rate we had another dead Benga female:

We(this is a split venture between me and my friend) called and talked to the guy with the lavisamole and he told us we probably didn't need it and to do the metro treatment then call him back if we still had problems.

Here is a photo of one of my red empress who was showing some white lumps on her face/ and body:
