Fish keeping, is it in the genes?

I keep fish because I'm a hoarder and fish are better than garbage.

Monster fish keeping is a lot more work as well as custom set up and fix it know how, which I think scares a lot of chicks away

I became serious about fish keeping when I got my better (still have her about a year later) and realized I was doing virtually everything wrong. In my research I began to feel bad and immediately got her a larger tank and worked fast to get it cycled asap to move her in

From there the snowball effect took over. I agree with the God mentality and really enjoy watching my little ecosystems and how they're acting and doing. I pride myself in clean tanks and happy fish that always seem curious, but also excited to see me

Okay, just for the record, i would rather keep fish > Dog... and i do love dogs... but Fish > Dogs for me...

But to answer the OP's question, i'm among those who love the fact that we can sort of re-create a small underwater eco-system, which can vary quite drastically from one tank to another...

Also, watching fish grow, and really taking care of them being their keepers, doctors and everything else just makes the hobby that much more interesting imo...

Last but not least, nothing is more relaxing then looking at a really well aquascaped tank after a long hard day at work with a beer or vodka (if its been a really hard day) in hand...

Glad we share similar feelings, koi maiden. And that's very interesting about the other forum, what's the site?

It is nice to find fishkeepers who share my view of fish. Love your avatar. I'd like to have a lovely tank of bichir someday.

The forum that I'm on is just your basic fishkeeping forum. I don't really know how else to describe it. It's not a specialist forum like simplydiscus or planetcatfish. It's just a regular fiskeeping forum where most people have community tanks. For some odd reason it just has more women than men.

Personally breeding fish and creating new fish is what got me and still has me hooked. i like breeding an average fish like angel fish then making them a ghost or a true black fun stuff

I got into fish keeping after one of my wife's impulse buys of a 14 gallon full set-up from Walmart! Had a common pleco (Mr. Suck-a-lot) and a gold fish in there. One day I got home and the pleco had sucked the guts out of the gold fish, so he became the sole resident of the tank. I was really bad about water changes and didn't know anything about cycling. That pleco somehow managed to live for 3 years in the 14 gallon tank and I got attached so decided to get it a bigger home. I got a 26g bow front and after setting it up (still not knowing anything about cycling) immediately put the pleco in there along with a parrot cichlid and an african clawed frog. The cichlid died a couple of weeks later, and then my pleco got sunken eyes and it's fins looked shredded. I treated the tank with whatever the lfs gave me, but my pleco died a few days later. It was the most horrible death I had ever seen. Poor thing kept spasing out for a few seconds, then go still and sink to the bottom. He did that for over an hour before finally dying. I was devastated and tore down the tank and listed on CL.

After a few months of not wanting to part with the tank and the stand I had spent hours building for it, I decided to get some more fish. This time, my wife picked out a brown african knife and senegal bichir. Got them home and acclimated, and started doing some research and found out about the wonders of cycling! That's when I joined this forum, and every day, coming home after a 12 hour shift, was doing water changes to keep the ammonia levels down. Got some safe start additives and a test kit and was worried sick till the tank was cycled. After all that work, I realized I actually enjoyed taking care of them and watching them for long periods of time every day and see how they were doing.

Now, after hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, I'm up to 5 tanks with a 110g and 50g in the garage awaiting a new stand before being setup and enjoying every minute of it. At night, my favorite thing to do is grab a drink, turn off all the lights, turn on the lunar lights on my main tank with the knife, bichir, ompock catfish, clown loach and tiger barbs, sit back and relax!

I've got my clawed frog in a 20L, my two red eared sliders in a 40 breeder, an Oranda, golden wonder killie and cray fish in a 10g till I finish the stand for the 50g and cycle it (the 50g will also house the rescued fish I found in the 110g when I bought it.) And everything else is in my 26g bow front till the 110g is up and running.

Sorry for the drawn out post, I tend to get bored at work this time of night!
