Fish keeping, is it in the genes?

For me fishkeeping is like having a part of nature in my house. I love to be outside and be surrounded by nature. One of my favorite things to do with my dad growing up was to go fishing. It's still one of my favorite things to do. I love being able to watch my fish interact with each other and with me. I'd have to say my favorite part about keeping fish is the breeding aspect. Nothing tops a big pair of cichlids defending their fry :headbang2

Maybe on another planet fish keep humans in terraniums.

I've been doing it for 30+ years now and it all started when I saw my aunts 240 when I was 7. Right after that I got a 20 and as they say the rest is history. For me when I was young it was the fascination of watching them swim around. As I got older it became the fascination of keeping different species and watching them interact.

Today I love to breed them and watch the babies grow in my 50 breeder. I use my 75 as my wet pet tank and the 220 as my cichlid community. With this I believe I get a little of everything I love with this hobby. The other aspect is the reading and research I put in from reading about fish and their behaviours, to building my own stands, etc... Its a combination of all of the above that makes me enjoy fish keeping and ill have them until the day I pass.

It's my little piece of nature and I can provide them everything they need.

Another thing I love about the hobby is taking pics of my fish. Really fun to do.. A dslr would be nice though

+1

Seriously one of my favorite things. I am so glad I bought my dslr awhile back, even if I end up with a million blurry photos of them swimming away or another fish photo bombing, that one picture that turns out amazing is worth it.

Photographing my tanks has become an obsession now, too. It's a way for me to combine my two hobbies. I'm still not very good at it, but I'm getting better! I'm going to get a new camera for Christmas, and I'm looking into an SLR. It might be out of the price range, tho.

As far as the fishkeeping thing being genetic, there might be something to it. My grandfather who I never really knew because he died when I was young kept oscars and jack dempsey. Not exactly what I like, but it's still an interesting link!
