Fish Money?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have a set budget, I'm always on the lookout for deals on craigslist and have gotten a few free tanks that way (including my 125). The most I've ever spent on a single fish was around $70, mostly I buy small and grow them out. I got a p/t job at a LFS...........it's not much $ with the little hours I work I make maybe an additional 2-400 a month, but I do get a nice 25% discount at the store so that makes buying food and stuff like that a little easier.

I ggree with Neoprodigy depending on how bad i want it.

So how many of you crazy hobbyist have unlimited funds for you preciouss?

To those that do have a limit, how do you set a budget for your fish ? do you have a set amount that you absolutely wont go over to get a fish , limit yourself to a specified amount to spend on fish , or just save up to get a fish you want?

In other words, how do you come up with the money to buy more fish and when do you say stop ??

To me, i make up a quota of how much i can spend and will absolutely not go over that amount on fish purchase. Supplies are not covered and there are some fish that are just exempt from all rules. :D

I have never spend over 1k on a fish altho I keep eyeing up fish in the 4-5k price range. but I cannot see the point of spending that amount of money with no return!

And growing up 2-4 5k fish for the hope of them maybe breeding is not worth the stress. (esp if there aros and it takes years to sort out prs etc)

I work therefore I can spend $$$. its easy i cannot buy what I cannot aford , sometimes ya just gotta say "stuff the rent this week I want another gar" :D

I should add I have brought alot of fish in the $200 - $900 range in the last 20 years or so.. , ugh @ the ones that have been fryed by dodgy heaters and the like.:(

I have maybe 50-100 dollars a month available for fish-related things, but most doesn't go to fish. It's been a while since I purchased an individual fish over 40 dollars anyway

If I see a fish I like, that will fit into my tank, I buy it. My Ornate Bichir is the last fish I'm buying for a while, because I'm saving up for a Fender Jaguar guitar. :grinno: (25% of the way there.) Of course, the only exception is if I come across a Ctenopoma kingsleyae or Ctenopoma acutirostre. Other than this, I'm done with buying new fish for a while.

I'm not going to tell you that they usually have some small C. acutirostre at Petsmart...:naughty:
