fish superstitions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My mother also used to tell me, that it was bad luck to step on catfish.... and by that she meant (rewind back to 1988ish)... we had a tank (pond) next to the house growing up..we had tons of what have always been called mud catfish.. ok so when the pond would dry out.. well the fish would borrow in the mud.. well as a young investigator.. I would roam around the dry tank looking for anything that caught my interest.. I would also walk barefoot... so many a time I would step on these catfish, mostly babies, when their fin was pointing upwards.. (there fins are hard).. btw when this happens infection sets in really quick, pain and puss follow... so wear your shoes around a dry tank!! So, it's kinda true about the pain and such... but that's not what she meant.. gotta love Mom!

Theres one in China that say that a Giant Wriggling Catfish makes earthquakes. I like there stories(:

Gotta love a lady willing to go barefoot in the mud :)

I hear ya' though. I got pegged by one of your Texas catfish once. I still don't know how a jab in in the fleshy part of your thumb can shoot pain up your entire arm!

It's amazing most of us survived our childhood lol

hahahhahah!!! This made me think of when my mom used to tell me that if I stared at the fish all the time, that they would die!!!! If it were true, I'd have to re-stock every day.... !!!

I'm hispanic, that should explain alot.... weird beliefs are normal...

I don't think that's necessarily a cultural belief. I think maybe it was your mom's way of telling you to go out and do something more productive than stare at your fish tank. kind of like when moms say watching tv will melt your brain.

that said. I know for a fact both those myths are wrong. kind of...

I'm joking about he hispanic thing... and we are not talking about myths, we are dicussing superstitions.. I added the story because you guys would have freaked out if I had put:

It's a superstition (in the hispanic community..jk) to step on catfish.

and why haven't you shared one... ?

Of course they're wrong, kind of. This topic is about superstitions. Stepping on a catfish won't bring you bad luck in a general sense. But yeah, as FM stated, the pain and infection from it is, indeed, bad luck.

Just like typing pleco in your Google search bar isn't going to kill off your pleco. Or, saying the full name outloud won't cause them harm either, I promise :)

I don't think anyone has ever sucessfully interpreted the "Chinese symbols" on the side of a Flower Horn either.

But, if I am ever in China and see a catfish wiggle, I am hitting the ground for sure!!

Call me superstitious but i'm damn freaked out when people/friends come home and comment on my aros.. always think they give em the evil eye.. so the next minute i'm cracking my knuckles to get rid of the evil eye.. and in most parts of india we put camphor in a piece of paper and do these lil circular motions clockwise anti clockwise thrice and burn it up.. and i do it every friday :) well i believe in it.. crack crack crack...

I don't really know any fish superstitions. I guess I've heard its bad luck to keep small, bottom dwelling fish in the same tank as large crayfsh. Anybody else hear that one?
