With all of those fish, I'd bet the nitrates are off the chart...which is probably why he's jumpy.

As others have said, you need to think the herd quite a bit. In the meantime, do more water changes (say 25-50% a couple times per week).

I might be wrong but only plants and water changes can remove nitrates.
:iagree:unless you have something in there to specifically take out nitrates then the filters job is to turn ammonia-->nitrites-->nitrates and then you have to take out nitrates manually

well i dont have the paramaters but the tank is a 55, and he is with one jag, one dovii, and three black belts. filters are an AC110 and AC70
Hey wait a minute that is only 6 fish counting your JD, I see 7 in the picture; a convict and what also looks like an unmentioned salvini ? Exactly how many fish are in that 55? You have way too many heavy hitters in that tank! Any other surprises?

Honestly you need to start some serious removal of fish or as everyone has said get a much larger tank.

Yup, that is the dovii. The picture was kind of hard to tell. I took at look at the tank setup and found this: 55G - 3x Black Belts 1x Convicts 1x Pictus Cats 1x Small Plecos 1x Dovii 1x Jaguar 1x Jack Dempsey

That is a lot of occupants for the 55 that:
1. Are aggressive
2. Territorial
3. Grow very big
4. Produce lots of waste

Is the 55 a grow out? I notice a 150g listed also, is this the future home of these guys?

u guys dont think an AC110 and AC70 is good enough to take care of the nitrates

As mentioned, filtration does not remove nitrates, water changes do...

My advice is to do a lot of reading and stop trusting your current source of guidance.

Your tank has far to many fish in it to last long term... I believe the Dempsey is jumping out because he is being harassed by the tougher tankmates...

I do not think people should use this situation as an example of Dempseys being skittish, I think we should use this as an example of improperly keepign fish as a way to make them jumpers...

yes i did forget the small female convict which no one ever touches( i guess she is the boss) but the other 150 is not for them. I plan on getting another 150 to replace the 55G tho, but due to economy i am having to put other things first.
