CF, I respect you a lot but I do not agree with your take on Bowfin. If Bowfin challenge Bass populations in waters where the two of them are native and naturally exist, or are stocked by the DEC, then it is either natural or is known that it will not have adverse effects. And even if you DO want to kill a fish, a quick and painless death is the way to go...enter length of PVC pipe or wooden souveneir bat. I think stabbing the fish in the face is kindof...irresponsible. As a fisherman myself (even though I am strictly catch-and-release) I would never do somethung like that to a fish, and if I saw someone else doing it, I would be hard-pressed to not say something.

However, I will end this post on a positive note, and a quote from a user on youtube who I spoke to:

We are on the same page, shoot I didn't even want to touch it, let alone stab it. That experience was kinda crazy. But with them affecting the bass population I don't know, I'm no scientist. What I do know is, want I seen them do to a lake in only a few years time and that was fishing going from great to well below average. The only thing that changed over the years was that I would here people from time to time saying they caught a big bowfin.

lol I agree. Being the catch and release fisherman that I am, I look for the oddball catch rather than the prized gamefish. I'd rather catch a Bowfin that a Bass, a Dogfish over a Fluke, a Catfish over a Sunfish, etc...

With ur aggressive word play I figured we would bump heads sooner or later. On the topic tho, I don't care what people say about bowfin, they might beable to live with bass and other native fish but they are making it hard for them.

Natural order of nature, too many Bass or any other type of fish in a given body of water isn't good for that fish either.

When I go fishing in saltwater I see this all the time, people killing, smashing, cutting up fish and creatures that aren't what they wanted to catch - example: spider crabs, horseshoe crabs and dogfish and toadfish - there in my way, there eating my bait or I don't care if they part of the natural order of things. You actually believe that Bass aren't eating baby Bowfins? I take photo of fish so I dont need to kill and mount them, I know people that still mount there trophies, I'm not one of them. Bass, Bowfins, panfish, CP and Trout have lived together for thousands of years. It's not them that are killing themselves off it's man and ok, I say non native speices too. But they get here with the help of Man! I Still love Snakeheads, even more than Bass.

I was fishing white city lake in Trenton, NJ in 07. It was spawning season and no lie I watched a school of 6 bass from 2-3lbs protecting one bed. Why cause the bowfin swiming around eating all their eggs are 2-3 times bigger and 200% more agressive.

Every lake that bowfin have become abundant. All other species have become harder to catch.

I find this hard to believe.

I'm not tring to justify killing any fish that I'm not goin to eat but bowfin, snakeheads, and all other fish like them are not good for the bass population. That's just my OPINION and what I have noticed from my fishing spots over the last four years.

BTW- I'll never kill a bass on purpose or eat one for that matter!!!!

It's supposed to get up to 56 today, so I'm going to "etra" lake for a 10-4.

That looks more like a Whitefish than a Steelhead Trout.
