Dreams, that river is the main tributary to another river that rivals this one in size until it gets much further south, like 40 miles, where it gets considerably larger. There is actually only one area that is deeper and bigger than this and that is just north of the lowhead dam 20 miles down river. That outside bend ALWAYS collects logjams, but they are likely to be in different spots and maybe more and maybe less, but the rubble isnt going anywhere. The fish that live in this system have no choice but to winter here. That spot that I showed with the dam and the smallmouth is actually only a couple miles up river and is a tributary to this particular river and the flats also winter there as I have seen them come out of there really late and really early in year. With the shallow riffles immediately following, they cant leave. Its fortunate and unfortunate that there are no huge rivers in the immediate area. Ill show you a pic next year of another flathead hole. You'll be amazed. This river is 6 inches deep in many spots downstream and upstream and is only an 8 foot hole about 20 yards long lined with rubble. Ive caught fish to 15 lbs here and have heard of high 20's. These fish also cannot escape until spring haha. That spot is about 20 miles north of the dam which is already a couple miles north of the spot I took the pic of. I definitely agree that the high waters of winter and spring do bring the fish further up river from down south because at that time, the lowhead dam is completely submerged.

You need to get back to that warm water discharge and catch some for me! I cant believe I missed that post.

I have only been carp fishing since they water dropped below flathead weather, with varying success. Carp fishing is moving up my list of favorites but will always be behind catfishing. The recent 7 lb channel came on packed carp bait on a hair rig. No carp today, but my fishing partner caught an 11 and a 6 lb mirror carp and lost 3 others to snags and caught one sucker. I personally just caught one sucker, my PB of that species. Air temp was mid 30's-40 and got some snow for the first time of the year this afternoon.
