Ok so let me tell yall about my last few days of fishing. My aunt that lives here and my other aunt, her sister, have both had knee and hip replacements in the last couple of years so now that they are feeling better they asked me to take them fishing.
Well, it started off great, we had a couple of reds and several nice whiting in the cooler as well as my personal best pomp of the season at seventeen inches.
One of my aunts hooks into a nice redfish and once she gets the fish in the surf I do the obligatory landing of the fish by getting in the water and grabbing it. This time it all went bad and bad fast. You see Im use to using double hook rigs and like always I look to see where the hooks are before I grab the fish. One hook is in the fishes mouth and the other stuck in its belly. I go to grab the fish as a wave comes in giving the fish enough water to start swimming back out. The fish swims between my legs and I feel it. The rig my aunt was using was a pre made rig that had three hooks and I completely forgot about the third hook which was swimming free. The third hook conveniently finds its way into the bottom of my big toe. Meanwhile the red has escaped to deeper water and has built up a bit more energy and is going nuts whilst I am sitting in the crashing waves in agony as the fish is pulling on the line.
Finally my other aunt realizes what is happening and brings down a pair of pliers. I managed somehow to corral the fish and have it pinned beneath me so she isnt moving any more. She cuts the line and I toss the fish up on the beach. Im free, or so I thought. I go to stand up and the hook was still attached to the four oz sinker which is buried in the sand unknown to me. I go to take a step, the line pulls tight again and again I am back in the sand in pain. I pull out the sinker and hobble to my chair. So yes, caught something bigger then any of you this week, a two hundred pounder. haha
Its decided that its best for me to head to the hospital because it tore me up pretty good and the fact infections can get pretty nasty. The lidocaine shots in my toe didnt feel too good and the last couple of days my arm has felt like someone beat it with a hammer because of the tetanus shot. Oh yeah, the red was barely legal at just under 27" so in the cooler she went. This all happened Friday.
Today I decided to take my daughter to the beach and do some fishing as well. The surf was dead calm and normally I wouldnt fish in it because the fishing is bad. I decided to stick it out for no other reason to let her play. After a couple hours of nothing my daughter starts screaming that we have a fish as Im starting to doze off in my chair and sure enough I look up to see one of my rods bowed up. I grab the rod out of the sand spike, start walking backwards as Im tightening the drag and the fish takes off just peeling out line. Of a solid twenty minute battle this beautiful girl comes up. My biggest red of the season at forty five inches and estimate weight of thirty five to forty pounds.
Enjoy the pics.
