The weather and seas FINALLY cleared up a bit. I went out first late Monday afternoon to check everything out because I had a "client" Tuesday morning. It was still pretty snotty out there and really I shouldnt have launched, especially given the string of bad luck I was having.
I recently purchased a trailer for my yak so that makes it ALOT easier to load versus putting it on top of my lifted wrangler.
Anyhow, unload Monday and drag my yak down to the beach. Turn on the fish finder and the dern thing keeps going into hard reset mode and wont do anything else. Turns out the down button, which you push and hold for a hard restart, is stuck so now that every time the unit turns on, it goes straight into a reset mode.
Great.
Well at least I have my handlheld GPS which should suffice to get me to the spot.
NOT. This unit goes out. I had put batteries in it before I left so I know it wasnt that.
Great.
By now Im about a mile and a half offshore, been slamming the kings, couldnt go more then a few minutes with out a run, but old bad luck rears its ugly head again and my rudder control knob pops off.
Then, though not bad luck because I did it, I realize my drain plug isnt screwed in. The rudder control knob out, I had to twist this littler metal thing that I could barely get my two fingers on to get the yak turning. I head to the beach where my buddy was fishing closer to shore and had him plug me up.
The sun is starting to set and its really getting rough out there. For those of you that dont know, coming back in with the waves is MUCH more difficult then going out through the waves. You are more apt to role and lose all your gear on the way back in. We decide to help each other stuff out gear inside the hull before we head back in. Given the luck Ive had for the day, I was a bit nervous. We both decide to jump in at the first sandbar and swim back in. This made me feel really great because with all the rough water we had had and rain, the surf was extremely muddy. Plus it was getting dark. Shark buffet for sure haha.
Well we hit the beach with all gear and appendages intact. What a few hours of fishing, geesh.
Yesterday I met up with my client at 0530. About a half hr later we are on the water. With no electronics I decided to just troll all day, which is what he wanted to do. Water was flat calm, which means tough fishing We got a few kings, a spanish and a couple bobos in four hours of fishing. Not a fantastic day for me but hey the client was happy and a hundred fifty bucks for a few hours of fishing is good to me.
