For my rod I'd probably be using a whuppin'stick medium action (sounds like a rip off brand of ugly stick but it's actually a very good rod) with 12 pound test on the reel. If you think that's to light I've also got a big Shakespeare with 20 pound test on the reel. You can tell I don't often catch monsters by my rod and reel setups, lol, hoping to change that this year and get some monster setups and fish. I've got some big top water and diving lures and I also have a good but of large flies that I tie myself. I can tie an even bigger one now and just put tons of lead on it for weight.
Whats the casting weight on the rod?

I must admit i have never fished spinflyes, but heard from other people their very good in cold weather.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMv_ytKqMJw Heres a video of a spinfly where you can see the action, and if your gonna tie on like what the design could be (I have never fly fished or tied fly, no idea how it goes down haha)
When its warmer, i really enjoy spinners, but now i use softbaits mostly, also some hardbaits like Savage Gear Hard4plays (what the 5kg pike i posted earlier was caught on). If you have some 15 - 20cm+ curly tail shads or grubs, or even tailbaits, that something i have had succes with in coldweather. Softbaits in general are good in coldweather, and warmer imo.

Another thing dude, dont know if i said this earlier, but if you dont have a big landing net, you wanna get some sort of a thin glove, and see a gillgripping video guide, a good way of landing, but if you dont use a thin glove you can damage your hands, a good bit and possibly loose the pike if it starts moving haha. Really best no to use lipgrips, and landinghooks. You can also land in a weighsling. (Weighslings are again nessecery for a good catch&release rate, you dont wanna weigh a pike with a hookweight, but you can just use like a ikeabag, or something like that, you make it wet, and pour out the water) Long post haha. From my understand you fish alot of carp, something i unfortunatly havent had luck with, dont know why have really tryed, and seen big carp on the surface, but they just dont bite, i was however fishing and 24 - 26 degrees with sun, (77 - 80 ferenheit).

Nothing today, again. Couldn't get a ride to the river so I fished the lake and creek for about 4 hours with no hits. Then tried a feeder creek to seine for some dace I've been looking for, couldn't turn up a single fish with 30 minutes of seining. December-March in PA is just a dead time for fishing if you're not out on the ice.

Finally! First fish I've caught since January! Got 2 creek chubs both about 4.5-5.0".

First trout action of the year, and freshly stocked 5 hours ago too! Got 2 rainbows (13" and 11") and 1 brown (12").

Nice catches. First time I ever saw a trout lipped I believe.lol. I used to trout fish a lot, plan on doing a ton of fishing this year (unlike last) and hopefully will dust off my extra light spinning gear. Already got thousands of superworms around the house ready for some rainbows. I love browns, always seem to nail them on nightcrawlers

Been a good decade or more since I've been fishing, but it's about time that I bought some new gear and hit up the trio of lakes within an hour of me. I started feeling the itch again when I noticed how many red wrigglers were squirming around while I turned the compost under :)

Hope the pic uploads. New to the fishing forum but got my first of the year today. Opening day for the spring season and it was a beautiful 32" lady!

Whoa! Beautiful catch. Hope my first catch of the year is that impressive :)

Thank you! Probably the best fish I've ever caught! Not the biggest but a big edible girl full of enough eggs to keep the whole family fishing for the year.
