Fishkeeping hobbyist stereotypes you encounter when people learn of your hobby?

I don't think keeping fish has ever been odd in my neck of the woods, there has always been a fish head or two in the bunch. I get more odd looks for liking cats.

Fish keeping may have a stigma for attracting introverts. I'm loud, obnoxious, out going, and have no shame.. so I don't really think I fit that mold.

Maybe it's different for high school aged kids, but high school isn't real life, and kids are jerks. No matter what you think is cool, some emotionally derelict waste of life is gonna try to break your stride.

I didn't keep fish in high school, I was too busy being "dazed and confused" .. but I did get made fun of for wearing jimi hendrix tshirts, but the only time I see those punks now is when I'm frequenting an establishment and require customer assistance.

I think you're right about fish keeping attracting a lot of introverts mudd. I kept fish while in middle and high school, I don't recall knowing anyone into fish at those times. Lol, my 5th grade teacher kept a community tank in her class, I think I DID get pretty dorky over that, (I was dorky all around though lol) I was the fish monitor :D

I can't believe the bodybuilder topic got thrown into this. I'm an ex-competitive bodybuilder (not physique). I did it for 4 years. Now I just workout to stay in shape. That's the reason my name is "Big Jay" I currently am 230 lbs and pretty much stay at that year round. Anyway, that's besides the point.

My take on it is this: You should/shouldn't do anything for anyone but yourself.

Bodybuilding, fish keeping, comic books, whatever. Own who you are and don't be afraid of it. I am as eclectic as they come:

- Offshore fisherman
- Hunter
- Licensed captain
- Fishkeeper
- Diver
- Bodybuilder (no longer compete)
- Work as a financial advisor

People tell me all the time I am one of the most interesting people they've met. I'm not in the clubs at a VIP table dancing on couches, or taking shirtless selfies on instagram, or trying to hangout with the "cool crowd."

Never do something to get girls, or to be popular, etc. You'll see that when you get older people don't care as much about being "popular." They appreciate who you are as a person.

Wait a minute, you aren't the Big Jay from youtube?

Well this thread proved my point in the oddest, creepiest fashion. I cant get this image of an oiled tanned dude pumping up and flexing in his fish room while reciting his stats and talking about his intense pump. Thats another one I could do without.

I started in seventh grade and me and my friend both got tanks at the same time and each had set up several other tanks in a period of a few months then when high school came he tore his down and I set up a saltwater FOWLR. Then I helped another friend sit up a 20. And I set up my current tank. Now I'm a sophomore in high school with 6 tanks and several in the basement waiting to be setup.

the first fish my girlfriend ever caught was a gar so when she saw mine she was almost in tears when I sold them

Osacrum, you have no idea what u are talking about and your last post proves it no body bulider of any sort sits at home getting a pump and putting a tan on. For 1 u get a pump at the gym and for 2 I get a professional spray tan 40 minutes before show time and as soon as its over it comes off obviously u have never had one bucuz if u did u would know how uncomfortable it is. So maybe you shouldn't speak on things u know nothing about my home life is as normal as can be and I love fish! Your sitting here talking about how lame stereotypes are who are the biggest stereotyper here, you just stereotyped the entire body building community people always hate what they ain't.

(Cunning change of direction)
