so if the cold kills tropical fish, how does floridas exotics survive till next year?

I think the tropicals live far enough south that they survive. If they migrate north too far, the winter does kill them.

After a good cold spell I have seen countless landlocked snook dead, if the fish cannot find deeper water they die, it is the same for all tropicals.

That is the key. They winter like anything else and their activity drops to almost nothing. The heat from the earth warms the deeper water more so than shallows or a higher column. When water is at different temps it separates like water and oil. The warmer water also gets the nutrients suspended under the cold and they basically absorb it from the water.....

That & a little thing called adaptation or survival of the fittest.

Some times we see oscar die off down here don't know if it is cold or not but the cold is only for maybe 1 week at a time during a cold front.

not rocket science, if they can find deep water, like the old gravel pits that used to be off of Alligator Alley, tropicals can survive. Also you may find them around power plants that have warm water discharge.

i would figure one night of cold could kill.
a week i would think it would wipe them all out.
