no don't listen to the countless dedicated gar keepers on here! oscars are great with gar, while you're at it include plecos and flagtails too;)

if i remember correctly also you were the same person that told me dont put my pbass with gars, why did you do it though? i dont want to start an argument but would like hear your explanation on here since it seems like your the big gar keeper around here

xander you forgot to include that snakeheads and pbass are great with gars too, or is that only because you can do it

Thanx, my wife took the best Gar pics that were around and made a photoframe with them, and it looks pretty cool, I think.
I'm so lucky with a wife that shares my passion for fish!:headbang2

don't forget that aros are a bad mix for gars also....if a fish has an agroressive temperment it won't work with any types of fish, if it is peacefull it could work with any type of fish...florida is a good ex. of things that in the original countries they don't co-exist but it is possible...i have seen tsns, clown knives, snakeheads, p-bass, oscars, gars and many more mixed up there...just watch the fish if there are problems then seperate them...

spatula, gar keeper was not cool. he fed his gar KFC. man what a moron. lol.

anyways, look guys, xander does have some bad tank mates. but he is prepared.
If ur new u should NEVER try a dangerous mix. When u have experience with gar u can try some of these combos. u have to be careful and what we are tryin to tell u guys is this is a very dangerous combo, not one of the combos that are a maybe combo but a combo that is truly dangerous. Try it if you want but WHEN ur gar is attacked or back is broken or something along thos lines dont come cryin to us. try it if u want but u have been warned

There are a few people on here who swear that it is a terrible idea. I personally asked this same question with the same results. This is a combo that sooo many people do with fine results. I would actually be interested to see the stats on success vs. disaster with these types of combos. It can be bad with the wrong temperament of fish, but I bet the odds are in favor of the combo working.

All of these fish CAN work together peacefully, especially if given enough space that they are not constantly running into each other. Most aggressive cichlids are considered bad tankmates not because they necessarily attack the gar, but because they are so aggressive at feeding time that it startles the gar, which then is likely to bolt into the side of the tank, injuring itself.

I kept a pair of pbass with my first florida gar, and it worked until the pbass got to around 7-8". After that, they were just so explosive when it came to feeding time that it was freaking my gar out. I traded the pbass away for another gar.

Now if you were to put those same bass and gar into a much larger tank (say 200+ rather than a 125g), then it wouldn't be as big of an issue, because the fish would have more space, the gar would be less likely to spook, etc etc.

With that being said, most of those combination's aren't recommended because of the possibility of things going wrong. You can definitely try them, and some people with have lots of success with those combination's, but you have to be careful about it.

I've also found this to be partially dependent on what type of gar you have. My Florida's, which are pretty damn easy going gars, were spooked by the pbass going after food. My shortnose gars can be spooked much much easier. They would be a DEFINITE no-no to mix with large aggressive cichlids.

true!
