My flowerhorn is having black patches on he head and on top of his body. It is really confusing I have tried many things to order to get rid of it. The water quality is good I do a 40% water change every week, I wasn't having a heater about 2 weeks earlier as I live in a tropical region and since the temperature is stable here I thought I could get away with it but now I have a heater and it is set to 28°C. Lighting is also mild and isn't too bright.

It would be great if any one know which type he is. I was told he is a KAMFA from the store but I doubt it. Any idea ?

Lol you won't get rid of the black spots. Those are a flowerhorns "flower spots". The spots are supposed to be there. They get that trait from the trimac cichlid blood they have. To me he looks like a red dragon (ZZ) FH. I'll post a pic of my old male to show ya some of the similarities between yours and my old male.

Btw to know a good sign of when a FH is stressed is to look for vertical stripes. The vertical stripes should not show unless it's stressed. A horizontal line like my old male had is just it's flowerline. Sometimes, like yours, they will have 2 flowerline instead of one. But yeah this is my old male for a comparison.

Btw if you don't mind me asking how is your tank set up? Mind posting a pic of it? Something in the tank might be stressing it out since yours has his stress lines showing.

It is a 65 Gallon(245 L) tank with a 1750L/h internal filter and a heater. The light used is 6500 k rate light. No tank mates.

And could you please explain about mine having two flowerline instead of one , I haven't heard about it before.

Yeah I'd atleast give him something to hide inside or under. A pair of fake Lily pads should work I would think. Atleast then he isn't stuck out in the open and feeling like he's exposed 24/7. Even with a man made hybrid they still have natural instincts and completely open water like that screams danger to a fish. They like having somewhere they can run to to hide from "predators" and if they can't it really stresses them out. In the wild fish have to fear about birds and other animals trying to catch them from the top of the water so even with something that's never been in the wild they still have those instinctive fears of predators coming from above.

But yeah if you want to lessen his stress I would add some caves or a fake plant at the top of the water for him to hide under when he feels threatened. Also, just like many other cichlids, FH's love to dig into the substrate of a tank so if ya could add a thin layer of sand, gravel or small rocks that would atleast give him something to do other then swim back and forth for hours on end. This pic here shows what I did with my FH's tank when I still had him. I gave mine a lil cave to hide in if need be and some sand for him to keep himself occupied. Also showing a mirror to him every day for 15mins at a time should help him get a sense of "dominance" in his tank, it just mimics him chasing off a potential rival for his territory.

Granted all these things I've mentioned are highly controversial in the FH community, most "experts" say to leave em in a bare tank but honestly FH's are just like any other cichlid and should be treated no differently. Give em a place to hide and relax with something to do with his time.

Think of it this way, would you like being in a bare glass box with no chance of escape or anything to do beside walk around or would you atleast want some sort of privacy with atleast some thing to do with your time?

More often then not if a fish has places where it can hide when it wants they tend to stay out in the open more just because they are comfortable knowing they have somewhere to hide if need be.

Yeah least to say there is allot of conflict in the community on how to keep em properly. Most ppl here will all agree that they should be kept like any other cichlid. You go to allot of the Facebook groups and they will tell ya the exact opposite of what I've recommended, except for the mirror trick that's very widely used by most FH keepers.

Now just remember tho that once ya start putting things into the tank it will stress out the fish for a bit but once he's adjusted he'll calm down and start exploring and checking out all the new things. Ya may stress em out short term but they become relaxed long term if that makes any sense.

But yeah hope it all works out well for ya. Keep us posted, I'd love to see what ya end up doing with the scaping of the tank.
