Flowerhorn growout

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As long as it's a mirror he can see himself in it doesn't matter how big or small it is. It's just the act of chasing off an "intruder" that helps with color development and kok growth. Now this part is the important part. Only use the mirror for 15-20 mins (After) feeding. Never do it before feeding otherwise they may refuse to eat because they're all pissy still. This method also work for females as well, you just see as much kok growth if any at all.

Another part of grooming I do too is more or less live treats every now and then. This is more for personality then anything else. It's also good for jump starting the breeding process.
Just curious, what if I were to keep the mirror in the tank 24/7. Would it stress the fish out too much and lower immune system or something?

I wouldn't have it 24/7. Its good to use to get him fired up a couple times a week but if its there 24/7 it could become a source of stress.

Enjoy this little video of daisy playing with his new “tank mate” I’m going to do 2 sessions a day, 1 morning and 1 afternoon both before feeding for 20 minutes each session https://youtube.com/shorts/0rGSH4nCvUc?feature=share
Looking good. I really like your flowerhorn. He will turn out nice. Grading fish is subjective when its out of competition and I don't grade but it my book your fish is grade A to me. Love the trimac but still fh-looking bodyshape, straight flowerline, Olive green and light pink color, good finnage, light pearling, Proportionate kok which will get bigger, but will probably always be very proportionate, Just simple, and unique, and probably better health genetics then most flowerhorn you see.

Thank you. I wasn’t expecting him to color up this much this fast. I’ve bought cichlids before at about 1” and it’s always taken until they get to like 3-4” to get their first colors. This FH has yet to disappoint me lol.

Is 2 times a day for 20 minutes every day okay. Or would 2 times a day 15 minutes every other day be better. Trying to get as much kok growth as possible

Up to you. You really don't have to do it that much. Like I said you can fire him up a couple times a week but you can't rush or force kok growth. Clean water, good quality pellet (hikari, NLS, Northfin) and keep it pellet only, avoid overfeeding feed only so at the end of the the stomach is slightly plump like it is the video you posted, in that video it may be slightly overfed but it ok to that level once and a while. A lot of people recommend too high temps for grooming but not all grooming practices are healthy. The 82-86F that people recommend can specifically lower lifespan, heightens risk of bacterial infection, speeds digestion, so your fish eats and poops more so more waste. Ideally I would keep it at 76-80 max maybe 82F simply for the longterm health of the fish. Obviously you never know there's always those outliers but I'm sure your fish is male.

Thank you so much I really appreciate the kind words and compliments on the flowerhorn. I remember when I first posted this thread someone said it was most likely a low grade flowerhorn but don’t remember who said it. Not saying it’s not a low grade FH but I think it’s got lucky when I bought this fish and somehow picked the one with the Olympian genetics lol. This was the last one they had at the store the day I bought him and the guy even double checked with me to make sure I wanted to buy it because of how terrible his colors were turning out but I just had a good feeling about this fish and I definitely will not complain with the outcome.

tank is almost always at roughly 76 except for midday it sometimes can reach 82 because the windows in my room are actually broken so heat and cold gets in a lot easier but I’ve been keeping my fan on low all day to cool off the room. I’m going to be fasting for 2 days and then feeding hikari cichlid gold and the occasional bloodworm cube as a treat. Water changes every Monday morning and watching the fish almost all day everyday lol.

I had an issue with the tank I had a few on months ago. My new flowerhorn died within a few weeks. PERSONALLY I’ve never seen a flowerhorn with so much potential I was mad she died. I had to redo the entire tank.26E2DFA0-8AA8-4609-8293-09F39C9341F4.jpegD0675378-2008-4810-9AFC-F76C37FCDA29.jpeg
