just read up and thouht i ask which do you like?
pros/cons,seems evey one like trickle filters with big tanks, which one is the best, easiest to diy, most relialbe is it worth haveing a fbf,may be as a second filter?

Trickle is by ar the easiest DIY filter. A FBF would be a great additional second filter.

Trickle filter normal part of the sump tank design, which mean the additional water volume and water tend to be more stable..it's the most natural filtering system. You can't go wrong to use it for the big tank.

I think FBF are awesome. I just recently got mine going with the help from a friend. I am now ordering FBF's for all my tanks over 55 gallon, and when I set up a real monster tank 300 gallon + the sand bed filter will be the backbone of the biological filtration.

FBF can out perform any trickle filter,it's just not recomended to use FBF on a saltwater tank.

Everything I have read says nothing to suggest they cannot be used on a saltwater system and in fact they all say it is fine for saltwater

The reason that its "recomended" to not use them on salt water is because they depleat the amount of oxygen in the water (wich is lower in salt water then fresh). But, if you combine the FBF with something like a wet dry, or even air stones in your tank it will more then make up for the lower levels of O2
