Fluval E-series heaters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought this heater too after my Ebo jagger went defective. It was indeed a pain when I first got it and the "LF" error message would constantly flash...which means low flow (water circulation). I added a second heater (hagen) on the other side of the tank - and this has given me stable temperature levels. Also, I have found it necessary to put an air stone directly under the heater - since I've done this I haven't had the LF error message and its been operating trouble free for months now. All in all, a lot of work for one heater. :nilly:

No dice, still stays too cold.

The marineland heater I had in that tank was actually a 250w. The fluval one is a 300 and it can't hold the temperature.

Sent to hagen:
Alright, my previous heater (which was a 250W visi-therm stealth) heated this tank to 82F completely fine. This E300 is supposedly a 300W heater (that or it has a VERY misleading name) and the temperature has stayed between 78.5 and 81, even though it is SET to 82. I've tried two of these, and now I've tried pulling a powerhead from another tank and pointing it straight at the heater for a day.

I can see that the element is turning off even though the temperature is lower than set.

Either I got 2 defective heaters in a row (unlikely) or these heaters are defective by design (translation: ****ty.)

I WANT to see this heater work properly, because it IS the coolest heater I've seen. However, if I'm going to be waking up every morning, seeing a blue light on my heater and rushing over to make sure my fish aren't freezing, it's just not going to happen. What I've seen so far does not impress me, and doesn't exactly make me want to buy a fancy Fluval G6 canister filter. No bueno.

This thing is going back to the store for good unless you can come up with some kind of solution.

I returned the heater. I'm not dealing with it any more.
I don't recommend them, unless they revise them.

My tank is currently being heated by a marineland stealth, and I think I will order a controller.

I would argue that ebo jager's have less reports of them failing because they don't fail as much as other brands, not because they are less common. Just because the thermostat is the same type as the Stealth, does not mean that the tolerances and quality control are the same.

they have an excellent reputation for quality.

some of mine are 8 years running and still working fine.

Ebo-Jager was bought by Ehiem a couple years back. I also have an older Jager (the green kind) and a newer Jager (black model).

I don't think the quality now is what it was then

Just my 2 cents :nilly:

Exactly, that's what I've been hearing. I don't think there is a truly reliable heater with a built-in thermostat on the market at the moment (the fluval tronic and e-series are the closest thing, but they don't seem to work well enough), therefore you can either get two underpowered heaters for redundancy or get a titanium element plus a quality controller.

Like I said in an earlier post, that Blueline controller wiith 2 x 250 STEALTHS set on full in my 90 gallon sump, with a differentiation of 2 degrees from sump to 225g tank (controller set to 84f and tank temp netted 82f) and it never even missed a beat ever.
