Fluval Evo Saltwater Startup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been doing 2-3 gallons weekly. Fairly light bioload I think. 3 fish and 3 blue leg hermit crabs. Nitrates have been staying in check.

So far so good. I leave the lights on for about 3 hours per day. I am also keeping the nitrates as low as possible with water changes hopefully to keep the algae from having food.
I think I am going to slowly start adding more crabs and snails.

When all else fails, snails and crabs do the heavy lifting on algae. My astreas are better at algae control than my weekly water changes and scrapings ever did.

I stopped caring about algae on rocks. It hasn’t been terrible since the hair algae outbreak of 2020. Looked pretty cool all over the rocks. The glass is my main concern, but it slows down after about 5-6 months. I do 12 hours of mostly whites, almost no blue (I like the look of white light over blue, despite it being algae food).
Coralline algae is finally dominating, a good sign.

Already starting to look for a larger salt water tank. This is bad. ?
One of my crabs has a giant claw. As the other two do not I am guessing this is not normal.
