I have not heard the pro3 running yet, but I almost never hear my fx5. It is in a large stand though. It seems to be very quiet and is grave yard silent compared to my hang on filters on my other tanks.

For that kind of money I would just design my own wet/dry system!!! That's what I am working on now!!!!

With the FX5 it filters mechanical in the top bin then Bio in the lower. I have it on a 110 with the FX5 mechanical filter pads 3 on top then a chunk of filter floss then 2 FX5 polishing pads in the first chamber. In the second chamber 1 FX5 polishing pad on top of Bio rings. And in the third chamber at the very bottom 1 more FX5 polishing pad on top of bio rings. And my water is crystal clear like the fish look like they are floating.

i would say the fx5 is more than twice as noisy as the pro3

I have both the FX5 and the Eheim Pro E and I don't hear any of them. The FX5 imo is a great filter for the money!
