Fluval Fx5 Modifications and Procedures Site

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The eheim is a better filter obveously, no one would disagree, but the Fx5 is still a great filter and for the price, you can't beat the performance. I don't know any other filter for $200-240 that has the output and filtration capacity.

I personally like the Fx5. I notice its potentials and I would like to pass this knowledge onto others without having to repeat my self. So I thought I could consolidate all this information into one place which is why I made the website. Its supposed to help owners decided on what to do to the filter and what the can do with it as well. It also to help Filter seekers make up their mind by listing its positives and negitives. They can then take that information and compaire it with other filters on the market.

I didn't design the site to be a "Fx5 Fan Boy" website. Just an informative website. Besides, how can you design any website that is about one specific item, not look like a fan site? Really? Atleast in others minds.

That all I have to say. If anyone wants to let me know anything about the site, I will be glad to read it. I will post updates as well.

Thanks to Miguel, this thread has been cleaned up, keep it on topic please!!

I had some recent dialog with Hagen Technical Support, and according to them, the circuit board does NOT have the capacity to shut off the motor in the event that the impeller freezes. In a way, this is good news because it means that no benefit is eliminated if the "smart pump" circuit board is removed and the motor is attached directly to the incoming 120V AC. Of course, this would also eliminate the "purge cycle", but I have serious doubts about the value of this feature anyway. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I recently bought another FX5 on ebay expressly for the purpose of modification and I can't wait to rip that baby apart.

Personally, I have never had any air purging from the canister after the first initial purge. I wouldn't mind keeping the "run 2 minutes and then turn off for 2 minutes" feature but every 24 may not be needed on most tanks. The main issue is that if gasses do accumulate from maybe CO2 or O2, then there is no way for the air to ever escape except for you to unplug it. This would be a very bad rap on the Fx5.

I can read it know, "The fx5 sucks because you have to manually purge the cansiter evey few days by unplugging it and plugging it back in". LOL

Well I don't have a link saying "Monster Fish Keepers" but lots of the "mods" and procedures and linked to MFK threads :)

I will have a mfk link. Don't worry :)

Im still deciding on what I should do with the forum, I have been adding more sections for more filter brands/types. Not sure if this would be a good thing. I dunno, check out the forum and let me know what you think?

Not worried, just would expect the same expediency as when asking for thread cleanups.

I am a FX5 owner now for 4 going on 5 months. I have an all
Tropheus tank 125 gallon with 17wild caught Chilanga's and over 60 Fry. I love the FX5 just wish I didn't have to tear it apart every few weeks to clean blue pad out as soon as it starts to clog I get lots of bubbles coming out of the canister into the tank! I have been studying this upgrade and am very interested indeed! Has anyone tried it yet? How much does the Bio Bale cost to fill it? I have Chem Stars, Fluval bio max, and fluval prefilter in my Fx5 now but got a funny feeling this would not be very much when time comes to fill it after the mods right? Would Bio-balls work as well also? Few quick questions I have is the egg crate I am guessing would just sit at bottom of FX5 then you fill to your liken with bio media and sit another egg crate on top of that then your filter floss sponge etc ? Ok Now the Mod to the top cover it is confusing to me can someone make it simple? Last question is this "So I had to make a "pocket" for the intake pipe to sit into. This will also allow for a 180 degree dispersion of the water intake flow" What is this and how is is sealed to side super glue? I am really ready to do this thanks. CD
