In everyones opinion what would be the BEST bio media to put in this canister after these mods? How often would you have to clean the Mech stuff up top after the mods? I have to admit cleaning every other week or sooner is a pain! CD

great site wish i had a fx5

You won't have to clean the coarse sponge for atleast 6-8 months. I have a "fine" sponge which could go for about 4-6 months. I did use a very find sponge which could go for about 2-3 months. 100 micron Polishing pads would go for about a 1-1.5 months, maybe two.

Hows that for improvment? :)

Bio Bale is used in pond equipment and is very cheap compared to all other media. LOTS of surface area. More than you will need. Everyone has their personal choice though. You can use what ever you wan't.

Man I think this post is sweet. It seems that my fx5 does not pump enough water. I have never really had a good hard flow through my output. I know I don't have to much meadia in the baskets sooo??

Also I cant make the Intake strainer mod link work.

Thanks and nice work.

How bad is the maintenance really? Is it used as the main filter in your tanks? Is that the problem?

I'm hoping it doesn't clog that quick for me, at least 3 months before I do any cleaning.

2217 + 2x FX5 in a 180G, what do you think the maintenance will be like.

I have not made a page for the strainer mod. Its basically using silicone on the back side of the strainer to allow only the front portion to suc in debris a little better.

The multi-direction nozzle is not that great. The way its designed, if you position the flarred nozzles in any orientation other than straight out, then you can get a reduction in flow.

Kevin, maintenance is not a real issue, it may not be as quick to perform as other filters. The clogging happends when using small particle filtration pads in the center baskets. Micron filter pads clog within a week or two and other small particle pads (not micron) will clog usually within a month or two.

Yea! I agree about the multi-direction nozzle,i have removed them from ALL my FX5s,the flow is much stronger with out them,i have also shortend the tubing AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! aswell as replacing the ribbed hoseing to standard tubing.WORKS GREAT!

The multi-directional nozzle is a good idea, but needs to be perfected, infact, the whole Fx5 design needs to be perfected in all honesty.

Keep in mind that you will see what appears to be a huge improvment in flow because you are not dividing the flow in half any more. So that will increase the velocity through one direction. The increase in actual volume of flow will not be as great but will happen in many cases.

I dont understand how people could possibly bash the fx5. For $200 it's a great filter, especially for the output. Why does it have to be an argument over which is best. Personally, I think it's just an argument over 1st and 2nd. It also seems to be the European guys bashing the fx5. Although, there was someone from Norwalk, UK that loves the FX5. T1Karmenn, you sound like a TROLL. Why do you find it necessary to troll around threads, stiring up trouble? If you want to argue with him about the fx5 do it over on the 2260 vs. fx5, this thread was set up to let people know about the procedure sight.
I'm 'European' as you say and do just fine with the FX5 (so too does a friend of mine). And I like the link to this thread-please don't generalise
