Have a 47gal bowfront and looking to upgrade my filtration. I was looking at the fluval 405 or the rena xp3 but heard some mixed reviews about tons of people loving them and others having leak issues etc... but have heard nothing but good about the fx5. I have read up and everyone says there isn't anything wrong with "overfiltering" as long as it doesn't create too much turbulence in the water. So should I spend the extra bit and get the fx5 or save the dough and stick with one of the other ones.

At one point I was planning to stick one of those on a 65g, I find the greater the filtration the less maintenance you have to do. IMO not overkill, as long as the unit is maintained properly, as for the turbulence it may or may not be a problem depending on what your setup is going to be.

I have an FX5 on my 125. The output is in the very top right corner, and sometimes my smaller fish in the middle to left center of the tank get blown around. I would definitely say overkill. You should get 2 of the Marineland Emperor 400s. I have one partnered with my FX5 and it does work. Creates surface agitation as well.

Don't worry, you can control the flow. I have a Fx5 on my 55 and love it.

Personally i've come to hate my FX5.

It's on a 55 atm, and doesn't seem like overkill at all.

Have one on my 70g, fish are doing fine.
