Fluval Fx5 on 47gal? Overkill?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for all the quick responses. Im looking for the best bang for you buck filter with the least amount of maintenance. right now the tank has a tetra whisper ex70 and a marineland H.O.T. Magnum that came with it. I am using it for 3 small koi fish (working on a pond for when they get bigger and using this one to keep them when they are small). I have one little live plant in it but would like more. looking to spend in the $100-$250 price range.

Were you planning on running the FX5 on a 47G tank in addition to the tetra whisper ex70 and marineland H.O.T. Magnum? An FX5 by itself would be ridiculous overkill to the point I'd be very worried about it stressing the fish.

Save yourself a lot of money, get an Eheim 2217, or just about any other brand of 1000-1500lph canister filter. Either by itself or combined with the whisper and Magnum, it will be more filtration than you will ever need in a 47G unless you fill it with more fish than water.

The FX5 is a great filter system and I highly recommend getting one. I have mine on my 90 gallon and it works great. I don't think you will have any problems with using it on your tank. You will not have to clean the tank that much. Good luck and think about getting the Fluval FX5.

I run a fx5 on my 75g. I only have 1 electric catfish in the tank. ECats like slow moving water. I was thinking that I would need to make a spray bar for the filter, but instead I just turned the outlet in different directions and that realy cut down the strong curent it creates. I may still make a spray bar in the future, but for now it works great. I could not be happier with the fx5. And I don't think my water have ever been this clear with any other filter I had. I was useing a 405 and Dive Power 200. Still useing the Dive Power.

i like fluval canister filters, always have. i think an FX5 on a 46 gallon is serious overkill. when a fluval 405 will do the job for far less money and less electricity.

i personally would add a foam filter run off of an air pump for 2 reasons: first, for the additional oxygen in the water (breaking the surface tension, not necessarily the bubbles), second, for backup in case of a power outage you can easily add a battery powered air pump and save your fish and your BB.
