Fluval G series

played around with these the other day at the LFS. the LFS in my area was one of only 20 authorized dealers in Ontario.

G3 went for $400
G6 went for $569 if I recall.

one thing that surprised me was how small theses canister are, even the larger sized one. they are built to be compact I guess. they do look neat.

the cartridges were expensive ($60 for some of them) but I guess you won't need to replace them often.

they have cartridges for removing 'waste', nitrates, ammonia and a 'three in one' as well.

I was also surprised to see that visually at least, they don't look to hold a whole lot of media, especially at this price point.

all in all, I can't see how these will do well (at least in my area). having worked at this particular LFS for years, I know the customer base and they won't pay this much when they can get an FX5 for $350 brand new and can effectively filter a tank 5 times as big as these ones can..

its gonna be a tough sell I think..especially now after I have seen them.

I believe Hagen would have been much better off to wait until more stable economic times to debut this
kind of 'cadillac filter' as my LFS called it

but time will tell.

i caught a glimpse of them online yesterday how are thee controls on them said it would control water parameters ?

I didn't get a chance to play with the screen, but it can display graphs for the parameters which is kind of neat. the output and hose clamps are similar to the FX5 versions. I am going there tomorrow I will see if I can see it in operation. it was being setup last time I was there so I got a chance to see it.

maybe we go to the same one,
either way i was debating getting a g6 vs an fx5,
IMHO fx5 wins hands down, the g6 only offers a fancy screen but a 20 dollar test kit takes care of that,
the ammonia removing cartridges are cool
but fluval also makes something called FLUVAL LAB and they have a special media that removes ammonia too,
all in all waste of money when you can purchase 2 fx5s for the same amount and get almost triple the turnover rate

this is going to be the biggest hurdle for these filters to overcome.

everyone who knows about the Fluval G is also going to look at the FX5 and they will know the prices too..

lol perhaps the Hagen Rep who brought in the display setup (it had a fluval G stand, tank, posterboard etc. to display the filters) used that line and the LFS staff are using it too..

the fx5 is a monster of a filter
the fluval g is TINY i mean it looks really nice, but the point of a tank is fish, no one will say " wow!! im loving your filter"

srsly bro the g3 is around the same size as a eheim 2213
also i know it can remove ammonia and other stuff but thats what media is for, which comes to my second point.. THE media bay is sOOOOOO small....
even an ac110 can hold more
the g6 is a little bigger in size and alot bigger in price,
when i was at my lfs the g6 and fx5 were sitting together on the same self... i wonder which one will get sold faster hehe im guessing the fx5 when people see what kind of GPH this thing does

i saw one at my lfs to its a fancy filter lol. easy to clean tho. the worker as displaying how easy it was
