fluval vs. eheim vs. rena...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I HAVE A RENA XP2 ITS 8 YEARS OLD NEVER CAN HEAR IT RUNS STRONG AND KEEPS MY WATER CLEAN. LETS REMEMBER ALL PRODUCTS ARNT GOING TO WORK LIKE WE WONT AND SOME WILL, BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT WATER MOVMENT AND WEEKLY WATER CHANGES OF 25 OR MORE IS ALL WE NEED

Fx5 or Eheim 2262.

I always shoot for high flow rates. 600 GPH will give you 4 cycles per hour which usually is enough.

Both filters have marginally the same flow rate. No one has tested the 2262's flow rate when its "clean" but I would like to guess its between 500-700 GPH. The Fx5 is 600 GPH, tested many times by many members including myself.

Eheim would be the top choice, but as stated before will cost more.

As far as gravel cleaning. You do water changes every other week but you said you gravel vac twice per week. If you use one of those electric gravel vacs they don't really work very well especially if you have a deep gravel bed.

I am going to either buy the fx5 or an ehiem pro for my new 125g saltwater.

The eheim pro is the quietest filter I have ever (not) heard. I literally had to put my ear on the canister to hear the motor running. It comes with a hefty price tag, but in the world of canisters there is a huge difference from the bottom, and from the top.

Marineland used to make solid filters that were cheap...now they just make them crappy. I wrote them a letter after receiving four filters in a row that didnt work. I wont buy anything from them ever again. Pain to set up, Pain to clean, and a Pain to deal with cause they break constantly. Plus almost monthly maintenance was necessary to keep flow rates high.

Let us know what you get and how it works out for you.

ive only used eheim and aquaclear... had my two 2028's for about 2+ years now with no problems. only opened them a couple times just for maintenance
