Not yet, I'm still waiting for my FX5 to arrive and my next paycheck :-). I'm hoping to get the tank set up and going this coming weekend and then next week get some fish in there. I know I'm going to get some rainbow fish for it but I'm trying to figure out if I want to go single species school on the off chance there is any breeding or go for a few species figuring that with the turtle they probably aren't going to breed. I'm also still trying to figure out what other species I'm going to put in there. I've been checking out a few fish stores around Tampa trying to get a feel for what is immediately available as well. I'll keep you guys posted, I appreciate all the help and input!

Chris. I love the FX5. I own two and am looking for 2 more. All to go on my 220 Gallon. I know you are a DIY guy, so you might be interested in some of the modifications that people have done to improve and exceed the factory specs of the FX5.

I'd go with a couple or more species, and not worry about them breeding. Just to have a nice blend of colour in the school to contrast with the black turtle. Red Rainbows, Neon Rainbows and Bosemani Rainbows are pretty common fish. I'd stick with the New Guinea species though, it would be neat to be able to have a tank you could call a New Guinea Biotope.

Thanks, Will. I want to check out how the FX5 does unmodified before I screw with it but I'd be curious to hear what type of modifications people have done on them and for what purpose, etc. I'm building a canopy for the tank this weekend and once that's done, stained, dried, etc., I'm hoping to get everything together and going.

If the fish work out in my 150 with my larger FRT, I'm also going to try a smaller group in my 55 with my smaller FRT. This potentially makes it so I can have a single species in each tank and not worry about mixing. At the same time, I really don't expect them to breed and after I am comfortable with the fish doing alright with the turtle, I may get more of a different species. I definetly am planning on Boesman's but wasn't 100% on what other species to try.

Now that you mention the distinct biotypes, it might be neat to set one of the two tanks up as a New Guinea biotype and the second as an Australia biotype. FRTs actaully come from both Australia and New Guinea, although I think technically the Australian animals are a second subspecies, Carettochelys insculpta canni, but thats not really a big deal. I could keep Boesman's and Red Rainbowfish in one tank and say Banded (Goyder River) and/or Threadfin (Featherfin) Rainbowfish in the other (all four are species I found available at a local fish distributer last weekend)...I'll have to check about keeping threadfin with banded though because of their size difference.

ever consider a big shoal of cardinal tetra???

they have nice color! ^^

My understanding is that the tetra like more acidic water then I keep my FRTs in. I've also heard from someone who tried tetra that some of these smaller species tend to swarm around the turtle during feeding, scaring the turtle.

I personally wouldn't get silver datnoids. They aren't the most attractive in my opinion, but have you researched them?

Temps for FRTs are recommended between 28-32C (http://www.carettochelys.com/carettochelys/behavior.htm) and mine have seemed to do best with temps around 30-31C. What temp do you keep yours at?

Are arrowana's able to take pH in the 8.0-8.2 range?

Do you have a genus and/or species name on the large dats? Not familiar with them.

The larger of my FRTs came from a friend of mine who had him for a few year and my other from a turtle dealer here in FL.

Chris

I don't know. maybe at around 25C-27c
