I was under the assumption that juvenile "fogos" are more similar to that of the "lower amazonas" and they only get intense red coloration just prior to, during, and after breeding. That is why many are "discolored" or "faded" red when photographed in the "off season."
There are also regular Cichla monoculus in the Teles Pires, maybe it's a hybrid (finger's crossed).
