Dammit!! I had a great, long ass response all typed out and when I went to post, it said I had timed out and could not post. It was lost. I'm not in the mood to type it all again.

That being said, I found this pic which I feel is more representative of mirianae.

For comparison

By the way, I sent these pics to Seiichi and he ID'd them as Xingu and orinocensis repsectively.

^ i kinda figured that fish was an orino. if you look at tainted glory's orinos, they have similar markings

I think a lot of questions are answered here in this letter. If you want more information, you can contact them directly.
If any of you are interested to go, let's plan it next May or June 2010. This time is for real. Don't chicken out. :D
Wifey and I are planning on going to the Amazon next year regardless, may try an make a good group trip out of this.

These are fogos in a tank, I dont know how to id them but the owner said they are fogos.
Seichii's....We really need him to stop by ;) Beautiful fish, and great example. You can see markings at this size are already starting to resemble adult markings minus the red and intensity of an adult. I take back my previous comment on 'sudden' change in development. Looks like they are along the same lines as most cichla with a gradual but constant of markings and color.

:clap All the talk and theory about fogo's color,........ just one email.
Pretty simple huh?? lol. We need to get some of the 'locals' to impart whatever knowledge they can.

Beat me to my posting...that first picture looked total Xingu to me. Glad that's cleared up.

Going back to some of the other pics you posted Scat, Looks like the mirianae from Teles Pires and upper Xingu are much lighter in coloration than those found in Sao Benedito. Not to mention the absence of red at the given sizes. Im curious as to whether these are simply patterned as so because of age and location, or if they are simply at a different developmental stage in growth.

When the last cichla revision was published, which named the additional 9 'new' species, it was mentioned that there was a good chance for half a dozen if not more new species to be named pending further study. I wonder if this may be broken down into another species later down the road.
