I have a tank with a ret tail cat and pacus. im currently feeding the red tail massivore delite sinking pellets. When they are in the tank they make the entire room smell horrible. is there anything that i can feed him that will not have this affect? or a way to mask the smell?

thanks

I admit that massivore smells totally awful, but the smell should go away after it hits the water! In fact, the food usually goes away (in my house, at least!) as soon as it hits the water. So, I'm not really sure how to help you. But massivore (and sinking carnivore and micro pellets) smell absolutely disgusting.

Can't help it; for the fishes' sake, I have to say it.... I hope you're working your way up to a 1,000 gallon pond or tank. These guys are going to need it. Okay, I'm done. Sorry. I know you didn't ask that. RTCs get up to 4 feet in captivity, Pacus to 3 feet. Done.

your right to ask him about tank size with fish that can reach these sizes a person keeping them is either a true monsterfishkeeper or the worst fishkeeper in the world (geuss which is more common)

get an air frshener thingy or whatever there called those plug in ones that make the room smell nice it will mask the smell but if your a real man youll go up to that bucket of fish food (or dechlor if you use a concntrated kind) and take a good whiff and say AHHH i love the smell of fish flakes in the morning

anyways hold your breath, or put a wet towl over your face - it works every time.

Talking about fish food, I sampled this pink tetramin flake - it tastes okay, I guess, my fish would like it more than me :)

If your fish food smells so disgusting that it deters you from using it, get a different food.

Massivore is one of the grossest smells I have ever smelled. As the mom of three Pacu and an RTC, as well as Florida Gars, believe me, I've smelled some gross stuff. The squid, the shrimp, the silversides, even the Hikari Cichlid Gold smells pretty bad. But Massivore (and the Micro Pellets, which is what I feed my community aquarium, along with their Freshwater Frenzy) smell totally nasty. Don't downplay the disgusting-ness that is Massivore! I'm just not sure why it's in the tank long enough to stink. Is your ammonia and nitrite at zero, and nitrates under 20? We just want to make sure that this food isn't sitting in there uneaten. Also, I definitely don't mind warning folks about maximum sizes, but I know some people get a little touchy, so I'm trying to do it more lightly now. If you'd like to see these guys at half-grown, check out my gallery for the indoor pond pics.

ok so massivore is gross. are there any other foods you all suggest?

and i dont mind the warnings. but i would hope anyone would assume that the tank theyre in is a growout.. that would be like keeping a great white in a bowl... im not quite that crule

Believe me, many who keep Pacu and RTC in small tanks do not consider those tanks a growout. I have 3 Pacu who came to me because of this reason. Please, please consider to build a 1,000 gallon pond or tank within six months to a year. I don't know how large your fish are, but this time period will pass, and it will quickly become unfeasible to house them in anything else. As for the food, I'm still not sure why it stinks so bad in the tank, and you don't answer my question on parameters, so I can't help you there. I'd figure out what's going on there, becuase Massivore is a fabulous food, and there's no reason not to use it. There's got to be something else going on.

I would agree Massivore is Sweet my Senegal Bichir tripled in size over three months with the stuff....and well...It smells but I have not experienced HORRIBLE, I mean it is quite tolerable

no amonia and very low nitrates and nitrites. my lfs says the water is near perfect.
as for the possible reason? the cat seems to suck the food in and spit it out a few times.. then he eats it. maybe there is like broken off pieces of food in the gravel that arent being sucked up by the gravel vack?

and as for ponds.my fish are all under 4 inches right now, but i was thinking of doing a indoor pond when my guys get a little bigger. i dont know much about it, but what type of filtration would i use and how do you monitor temp on such a large body of water?
