you guys, stop bashing him just yet..

what if he works at/near the petstore?

say he works at a mall in or near the petstore where he drives to work every day anyway?

its one thing to be the ignorant one who needs correcting in his ways, but for those of you who like to spot them out, be SURE you have no ignorance yourselves. and always be open minded.

besides.. if hes the one making the trips weekly (and not you) to get his water tested, im sure he'd figure out pretty fast that the gas prices exceeding the cost of a kit and that buying one would be wise. or if he takes public transport if he ever gets tired of taking the time for this. all this provided that he doesn't work near/live near the petstore and he takes his own time out of the day to do this, which we don't know yet.

all we can do (for any web forum member) is trust what they are saying. Trust that he does know what he's doing because really, if he doesn't. all will come to pass on each's own account anyway. nothing you could have done better than give help and information. which Bashing out of an itchy trigger finger on a touchy subject is not.

I don't think there's anything wrong with stating my preferences on testing. If I'm watching my fish at 3:00 a.m. and one of them is acting funny, I want to test. If I didn't own kits, I couldn't. I'd have to wait until the LFS opened. These are large, and growing huge, fish. If something goes wrong, especially as the volume gets smaller and smaller relative to bioload, things could go bad, quickly. I don't feel like it's bashing. I'm simply stating the standard of care that I hold myself to for the sake of my fish. The other problem is that when the OP took their water in, there was nitrite, and the person at the LFS apparently said that was okay. Obviously, it's not. There's something not right with the tank. So, who knows what the levels were days or a week before? The OP should be testing every day and trying to figure out what's wrong with their biological filter. The majority of the time, people who post about their sick fish have no idea what their parameters are. This can't merely be coincidence.

In addition, I actually own these types of fish. I have 3 Pacu and an RTC. So, I'm not just running my mouth. This is what works, in my experience, and I've learned a whole lot during the year and a few months that my RTC has grown to a little over 2 feet, and in rescuing 3 Pacu who were already quite large, but will continue to grow larger. This isn't some tetras or guppies in a 20 gallon tank. This is whole different ballgame, and the OP needs to be ready for that.

ya but those are your preferences on test kits not his.if he trusts his lfs then he trusts them. they are his fish and this is how he chooses to take care of them. just let that be quit bashing his tank he will fix the tank size in time. most people may be uneducated about this area but it seems he is. this is a thread about stinky fish food not test kits and aquarium sizes. just talk about fish food thanks! end of discussion.

I'm not here to argue. I'm here to help people learn about the needs of their fish who grow to four feet or larger. I have not bashed anyone. He is not as educated as he needs to be if he allows nitrite to be at any level other than zero. The fish food stinks. It should not make the water stink. Therefore, there must be a problem. It's not getting eaten, or the OP isn't cleaning his tank enough, or something. There's something else going on if he has nitrite and his tank stinks. I feed a lot of Massivore and my water doesn't stink. I'm trying to help him figure out what it is, which is why I asked what his params. were. They were not what they should be. This could point to a problem, not just with a stinky tank, but with a biological filter which is failing. Again, I keep these fish. I have learned a lot during the short time I've had them. I've learned that you have to stay on top of maintenance and testing. And if your water stinks, then there's a problem. Thanks for your input and your decision to end the discussion. Since you were not a part of the discussion to begin with, I find it humorous that you come and decide to wrap things up.

i'm glad you find it humerous i love to make people laugh. i understand you have owned these fish but not for very long is my understanding. you two may not have the same size aquarium for the type of fish you two own and the fact that you are judging this guy when all he wanted was a cure for stinky fish food

i find this thread to be just silly and rude

No, we don't have the same size aquarium. My fish are in a 1,000 gallon pond. Which is what the OP will have to build or buy if he wants his fish to live. These are fish which grow incredibly fast. You obviously have no experience with them, or you would understand where I and other posters are coming from. If you find the thread silly and rude, you don't have to read it. Don't attack people who come from a place of experience just because you're inexperienced. I have only had these fish a year and a half, it's true. In that time, my RTC has grown to a little over two feet long. We have built him a 1,000+ gallon pond with filtration equal to 12x the volume of the pond. We have adopted 3 Pacu, the worst of which was 20 inches long and in a 55 gallon tank. So, I know what happens to these fish in most cases. I'm trying to prevent it. You're trying to tear me down becuase I've only owned the fish for a year and half, yet I've done ten times more than some people do who keep fish at all, becuase that's what the fish demands. And because this particular fish demands this type of care, it is not a fish for everyone. The OP doesn't have to keep these type of fish. If he or she wishes to, he should spend the little bit of money for a test kit. Don't be a troll.

i'm not trying to tear you down its true i have little experience owning these type of fish but i have studied them thoroughly as i work at a public aquarium and help often to take care of the fish and inverts. i respect your candor in trying to help someone who needs it badly and all i'm saying is everyone can be little more chill in what they say. thats all i'm trying to say.
