Food smells HORRIBLE

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it would be cool if you could both just chill. arguing isnt helping me at all and thats what this forum is for. i have no problem with constructive criticism from someone who knows the game. but at the same time i find that 90% of the threads posted somehow end up being all about how the tank isnt big enough... when the person posting didnt ask for advice about tank size. i get both of your sides. but everythings cool. ill be getting these guys a pond in spring.. and i have just been cleaning the gravel more and doing more water changes with actually did help my water quality. he was right about the nitrates and nitrites. they were out of wack but i got them under controll and ive been hand feedoing my rtc's to ensure no left over food in the tank.
thanks for all the advice and help.

sikoko...i like to see guys from ct on here. But be quiet on this one.
You obviously do not know what is being discussed here..the reason a fish tank stinks is because of something other than simply food. Therefore, justonemore was trying to figure out what could cause that. Oftentimes with fish that get so large and produce so much waste/are such messy eaters, the problem lies within overfeeding or lack of filtration or cleaning. Im sorry but why do ppl like you post?

I feed some pretty strong stuff (tetra cichlid sticks and freezed dried plankton) and the tank does not have much of an odour at all.

probably what is happening is that along with the readable nitrite, you may have a readable ammonia level in the tank.

this will cause the water to smell bad.

double check your water parameters.

generally, no matter how gross the food is, if the water parameters are acceptable, the tank should have no discernible odour of any kind, unless you open the lid of the tank and stick your nose up to the water. then it may smell a slight bit fishy, but again, it should not be very strong.

ie if you can smell your tank from across the room, there is something not right.

gross smelling food does not make the water smell bad ( perhaps aside from the first minute or so that the fish are consuming it) unless you have some of this particular food uneaten and decaying in the tank.

hope this helps

irishfan i apologised and now i'm letting it drop i know quite bit about these two types of fish as i said earlier i work at a public aquarium and have studied them thoroughly. yes it is nice to see someone from ct. what part are you from.

I was about to say you could have just confused nitrite with nitrate whilst typing to us. but reading what i missed i recline that statement.

looks like everything is under control. happy fish keeping.

Here's a idea that may be part of the problem; my fish being rather large have this habit of splashing food and food bits around the trim, where it gets moldy and produces the worst smell I can imagine (which given my fondness for beer and processed food, is pretty bad).
