Not trying to hijack the OP's thread, but i have considered changing to a lighter substrate, but at the moment my male is an almost iridescent purple and really does look good. I think the he would lighten for the worse, on a different substrate. I haven't tried it, so i am just assuming. If i didn't like it, changing back to black would be a pain in the $$$

I also have a few smaller growouts, that are on lighter gravel, so i guess time will tell

They are great fish, alot more interactive than i thought they would be. My male is more like an Oscar, getting excited everytime i go near him. He will happily take crickets and locusts from my hand.

I like the look of these guys on the black sand, but I'm also curious on what they would look like with neutral substrate. Please take/post some pics if you can.

Those two are beautiful Calvin. The 3 I got from the same order are still barely 3". Hope I have a male that looks that good. Let me know if you get bored with them.

I've only got a few pictures that were taken some time ago, with a phone. They are terrible

I have been meaning to get a new camera for a while, but never seem to get round to it. The colours on this fish really are stunning, but my picture taking skills coupled with a phone camera do him no justice at all

You can at least get some idea of his shape i suppose lol.

Well, it looks like my male has cheated on his mate and decided to spawn with the smaller female today. I thought I would try out my wife's new IPhone and see if I could post a youtube video of them. Hope this works..

Well....it looks like the female is still too young to know what to do with the eggs she laid yesterday, so she ate them (or some else did). Looks like I'm back to waiting again....
