'Frankensalmon' ruled safe to eat: Fast-growing GM fish approved by scientists

Tap water is nasty. I didn't think anybody still drank it. There's a well near my house. It's not perfect, but it doesn't have any fluoride in it. Win.

I am the very poor. And I'm sick of dying. I was raised on macaroni and cheese and kool-aid and pumped full of prescribed meth (known as ritalin) for four years straight. I didn't grow one inch those years. I stared at the ground, my mind stuck in repeating stanzas that had nothing to do with reality. I then gained 100 pounds in one year when a family friend noticed I was just a staring skeleton and they stopped the pills. It's taken me ten years to sort out reality from the lies I was fed. I have nothing but hatred and disgust for the lies the media and industries feed us. Their greed had me near death before my life even started. There is no excuse for this mutant fish except greed. The people creating this fish just want their millions and will happily sit and scribble notes about how it affects those of us who eat it. Remember the syphilis experiment? They knew the cure, had it in hand. But they gave out placebos instead, just so they could see how it killed people. The world is toxic. If you want to die drinking its deadly milk, then just stay latched on like the infant you are now. But know that there are better ways to live, cleaner water, food and light. There is a reality behind the confusing onslaught of commercialization and standardization. Find it, and live.

Wow...your personal experience is not the norm...i can see why you come off as extremely bitter and to an extent, paranoid

my dad almost died from bacteria in his well water. there are dangers everywhere. like i said earlier; pick your battles. i don't have fluoride in my tap, it's chlorinated.

just as you don't trust big industry and government, you should be equally as skeptical of alex jones, david ike and any other forces trying to sell you things, even if it sounds as harmless as "organic".

Agreed. Organic means very little today. There are even organic pesticides, of all the irony. Almost nothing is safe to eat. Every day is a battle and I'm willing to fight. That's why I don't like these mutant salmon. They are dangerous on ways we can think of, as well as ways we can't.

Sorry for the 10-day bump...but Knifegill speaks the truth. The media and corporations run your life. I'm not a conspiracy theorist or paranoid, just not ignorant.

When you are a kid you are told that eating meat makes you grow muscles, drinking milk makes your bones strong, and eating vegetables help you see in the dark.

they're not forcing you to do anything, you choose to let them run your life, or not. each individual will make the choice and if they feel like they made the wrong one, they'll usually blame the corporations and media for "making them do it", instead of blaming themselves (the person who was ultimately responsible for their actions). the information is out there for everyone if they care enough to look for it (you found it, so it must be out there!). if you don't care, then you deserve to be strung along like a puppet.

yeah yeah, i know they lie just to sell you crap, but if you can't see through their bull, that's your problem. i don't care how charming vince is, i'm not buying his sham-wows! i also know that my burger won't look anything like the one on the menu and my green tea won't make me live to be 100.

True, i'm not trying to be cliche and blame the big evil corporations. Personal responsibility and being able to think for yourself goes a long way.

A reasoned response. Thank you!

There are so many misconceptions that need to be cleared up here. There are no chemicals being added for one. So you are not consuming anything toxic as far as that goes.

Two, they are not adding hormones technically. Just modifying the DNA structure of the fish to grow faster. And as the article said its a combination of slightly increased GH, and an increased metabolism to continue growing faster. (They made it so the metabolism continued to operate at high levels even in colder temps when metabolism would normally slow down. Hence why fish grow faster in your tanks when you turn the temp up.)

Three, this is awesome because it could help prevent overfishing out worlds oceans and destroying our ecosystem and eventually our home. If you don't agree or feel it is safe, fine don't eat it, but support it because this will help our environment in the long run, especially since they are sterile.

Fourth, this is one step towards ending world hunger. Now while I think our population shouldn't be as high as it is, I don't believe someone should go hungry due to food shortage, over fishing, and many other reasons.

Fifth, people seem to think this will alter our DNA if we eat it, that's ridiculous. The DNA is contained in your nucleus and will not allow anything but certain molecules into it. Virus' inject their either DNA or RNA depending on the virus and is designed to use our ribosomes to produce viral proteins to create more virus'. So unless the DNA of the fish could survive the process of being cooked, eaten, and digested then MAYBE, but its not designed to do so and DNA could never survive that process.

Just wanted to clear some misconceptions up.

This is not going to solve world hunger. We have plenty of food available, in western nations at least. Its going to take specific initiative to get the food to the starving. And why salmon? Start with food items that are easier and more cost effective to transport....not meat. If we wanted to solve world hunger we would be feeding the starving people what we are feeding livestock that is slaughtered for human consumption.

Its great that it can help wild populations...but its pathetic that populations are being strained and exploited for consumption in the first place IMO.

This reminds me of when the media got a hold of the rBST hormone that farmers use in their dairy cattle. Here's the words right off the label of Nature's Pride fat free milk : "Our Farmers PLEDGE (notice the capital letters) Not to use Artificial Growth Hormone*(also notice the *). This is on the label highlighted in yellow. At the bottom of the label in very small print it reads this "*NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE HAS BEEN SHOWIN IN MILK FROM COWS TREATED WITH THE ARTIFICIAL GROWTH HORMONE rbST AND NON rbST TREATED COWS"The farmers PLEDGE- This is the best thing about the hormone rbST. There is no test or device; absolutely nothing, to detect that hormone in milk. The farmer signs a paper that says he/she will not use this hormone in any of their cattle, and is in return, paid more money per 100 weight for their milk. Secondly, growth hormones are species specific. Growth hormone is a chain of amino acids that do not adapt nor can be digested orally. If ANY growth hormone is taken orally it is broken down as protein through the digestive track. Even if a human is using human growth hormone, it needs to be injected for it to be effective. Now, I'm also looking at some Blue Bunny ice cream... No where on the package does it say anything about it being rbSt free, yet, as we all know, the main ingrediant in ice cream is MILK!My conclusion to this whole story is this: For rbST, I would like to talk to the moron who can relate this hormone to premature puberty. For the frankensalmon.. I for one don't like fish, so I wouldn't eat it either way, but, we just recently developed a method to detect hgh usage in humans via bloodwork. Until we can develop something similar in fish, there would be no way to detect the use of gh in the salmon other than taking the persons word that they are using it
