'Frankensalmon' ruled safe to eat: Fast-growing GM fish approved by scientists

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow again the Growth Hormone is not an addition (the person saying they have a Major in Biochem should know they are keeping the genes that say GROW On longer than usual by changing DNA itself....Again if I (for a bizzare/serial crazy reason) ate someone with Down Syndrome I would NOT get Down Syndrome....

Evolution happens because our DNA reacts over millions of years to all sorts of influences of which what we eat will be one of them, of this I am sure.
Over millenia our DNA adapts to the changes in our environment and our "prey" items as determined by nature. Short term changes to our environments have been shown to be bad, take asthma, exzema, autism, etc. These genetic conditions are thought to be a direct result to the extra pollutants we encounter everday.
What happens when the DNA changes in our "prey" items accelerates faster than evolution allows our bodies to adapt with the changes?
What happens when our evolution is no longer in sync with our "prey" items?
The only real answer is no one knows unless they do proper research over decades. Surely past lessons has taught the science community to aire on the side of caution with such large experiments. Taking the proper amount of time to study things in-depth could save a lot of heartache and probably money further down the line.
However, I am sure the company with the most money will tell the various governments to tell us what will happen after decades of life.
Money talks and secretly poorer families in society will be the guinea pigs, and the companies will be watching and taking notes, because they will be the ones who are ultimately left with little or no choice over what type of salmon they want to eat because of how much natural salmon's price will sky rocket.

i apologize in advance for nitpicking, but as the supply of natural salmon goes up and the demand goes down, the price of natural salmon will actually drop to compete with the GM salmon. economics 101.

The FDA can still be a good agency. However, after decades of DEREGULATION (YES, DEREGULATION!) since the 80s, the agency doesn;t have any teeth to bite with. Many of the guidelines they use to deem "safe" are pre-1980s and many are still from the original 1930s when the FDA was created.

they must be pretty good guidelines if they have been around for so long and didn't get cut while deregulating! naturally i'm kidding, i'm just illustrating that if you don't tell us what guidelines you are talking about, it makes it pretty easy to put a spin on it.

As someone who Majored (with Honors) in Biochemistry and will be attending med-school, I see a problem where the increased GH (Growth Hormone) in the salmon could be passed onto the consumer. We already have a horome problems with shampoo and other meat products.

i'm not disputing this, but would you mind elaborating?

FDA approval doesn't mean much (as others have said).

i would hope everyone is skeptical of the FDA.

Usually just means no immediate harm (notice all the recalls?).

This is why I go with organic. Call me a tree hugging hippie all you want (idc).

My 2 cents.....

i wouldn't call you a hippie, you're just airing on the side of caution. :)

LOL!!!

From my understanding of the article (maybe I read it wrong), but the NEW salmon UPREGULATE the production of GH, INCREASING GH output, thereby increasing the GH in tissue.

Your down syndrome analogy is laughable. I'm talking about a molecule, your talkign about a person with a mis-developed brain.

is the salmon GH the same in structure as the human GH?

would salmon GH have any effect on humans after cooking and/or being ingested?

Antibiotics and Hormones injected into farm animals can be passed onto (or into) the consumer. (by directly eating it). I would think most would be broken down, but since hormones are unique, some are able to freely pass into other cells, bypassing proteolytic enzymes etc...

I'm just brining up the concern for such a scenario, probably should have said "could" as that is what I meant.

Heat could break it down. Salmon GH might be or might not be similar to human GH (GH used by persons as hormone therepy actually comes from pigs).

i am assuming the type of GH injected would differ from the type of GH the salmon produces in body as well. we could be looking at two very different molecules.

Your right, they could be different or the same molecule. After looking back on my post, I said it correctly. It COULD be a problem.

i heard that these pigs are genetically modified to produce a viable GH for humans. admittedly i never looked into it myself! any truth to this?
