14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP 14) to CITES
Sawfish:
The international trade in sawfish – large rays related to sharks, has been banned today. All species of sawfish were included in CITES Appendix I. Sawfish are traded for their fins, meat, unique toothed rostra (snouts), and as live animals for exhibition. Their distinctive saw-like snouts are sold as souvenirs, curios, and ceremonial weapons, while other body parts such as skin, liver oil and bile are used in traditional medicines. The vote made an exemption to let Australia export one of seven species "live" to aquariums abroad for conservation purposes. In CITES terms, all sawfish will be labelled as "Appendix I" with the exception of this sawfish species from Australia, which will carry an Appendix II listing (but no trade will be allowed other than live animals for conservation purposes).
The vote, proposed by the US and Kenya, was adopted with a strong 2/3rd majority. The final vote count was: 67 for (69%), 30 against (31%) and 7 abstentions.
