freshwater sawshark

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol I live in Australia and theres pretty much nothing I can do to get one, than again LFS where I am never seem to get hold of the rarish predatory fish I'd like to keep that seem so common overseas.

We've got two (male/female pair). Both are about 7-8 feet tip to tip. Permitting was a pain even for us, so I can't imagine how a private owner woudl get one legally out of Australia.

If you get one, be prepared to have a small ocean of a tank - think in ground pool size.

I caught one when I was fishing onshore in the everglades. Due to the fact that these were endangered species, I threw it back in the water and reported that I caught one (probably 3 feet long or so).

I didn't know people kept them as pets in a private aquarium O.O

Just as an FYI - ALL sawfish are now illegal to posses or trade (alive, dead or even just dried body parts) as per the newest vote of CITES.

Was going to edit this in, but that feature didn't show up for some reason....

14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP 14) to CITES
Sawfish:

The international trade in sawfish – large rays related to sharks, has been banned today. All species of sawfish were included in CITES Appendix I. Sawfish are traded for their fins, meat, unique toothed rostra (snouts), and as live animals for exhibition. Their distinctive saw-like snouts are sold as souvenirs, curios, and ceremonial weapons, while other body parts such as skin, liver oil and bile are used in traditional medicines. The vote made an exemption to let Australia export one of seven species "live" to aquariums abroad for conservation purposes. In CITES terms, all sawfish will be labelled as "Appendix I" with the exception of this sawfish species from Australia, which will carry an Appendix II listing (but no trade will be allowed other than live animals for conservation purposes).

The vote, proposed by the US and Kenya, was adopted with a strong 2/3rd majority. The final vote count was: 67 for (69%), 30 against (31%) and 7 abstentions.
