From aggressive to peaceful

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was a little frustrated at first but I kept working at it and now there is peace in my 110 with 4 normal aggressive species.. its about finding balance and knowing ur fish.

I tend to agree. I have been buying, selling and reading fish to find fish that have been able to coexist. My very nature draws me to large aggressive fish, that being said if I see any trouble I separate and get rid of the fish causing problems.

I think I could get into large semi-aggressive fish too, but for me size matters :) !

One more thing, I love the way a large well decorated planted tank looks! Maintenance is key though and I do think you need the eye for it. I don't have it and I'm too cheap that's why I have little decor and big fish. Gotta fill that space with something.

I agree with this and I made my 180 into a peaceful community but i just couldn't take it I missed the bigger fish and the predatory behavior of them and I had to go back you can still have a peaceful tank with cichlids given the right circumstances but in the end what makes you happy is most important

I am kinda split now, with a SA tank that is low aggression and a solo wet pet glass killer (my avatar)

I was tired of constantly buying and selling off cichlids to try and get the 'right' mix that would get along. So I made my 210g a peaceful community. Still have a cichlid in there, a big peaceful Pearsei. His tankmates are red hook silver dollars so super peaceful, though they are skittish which does not make for a relaxing tank. Only aggression is that the rhino pleco and hopplo cat dont get along. These will probably be moved and a couple bichir will be put in instead. So super mellow, peaceful tank for sure.

I did it and I still have my Severum tank, but I still need abig cichla tank in my life!

I have thought about this a lot having a CA cichlid community. My aggression in my 150g CA community isn't bad at all, but I still worry about all hell breaking loose. Recently my 8-9'' male JD started to chase my larger syn. I am now considering on getting rid of the JD even though things aren't bad. Its just from experience CA cichlids are very unpredictable. The only thing that works to reduce aggression IMO is removing the aggressor. It sucks, because I like keeping fish for the long term and my wife won't allow other tanks (I only have a 25g otherwise).
I have thought of other "peaceful" options:

-A single 12-14'' CA/SA cichlid.
-A sp. community-like a group of firemouths.
-A mostly characins tank-I have 5 two spot astyanax. I love these fish and the cichlids would go before these guys. They are hard to find.

I have seen just as much aggression in a peaceful fish as the cichlids. Its just like with people fish just get tired of each other sometimes and fights breakout. Our 150 is a cichlid community tank and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Sure there are a few pushing matches but they never amount to anything. Cichlids just seem to have the best personality not many other fish will fallow you around the tank.
