Fully aquatic something for a ten gallon?

my vote is still on tadpoles or tadpole

Don't get a tadpole unless you are prepared to keep the adult. Anyhow, the most commonly found tadpoles at fish stores are American bullfrogs, which get too large for a five gallon.

If you get a newt, stick to a Cynops or Notophthalmus species, and only one or two individuals. Other newt species grow too large. I know you are looking for herps, but frankly a five gallon tank is much more suitable for shrimp or dwarf crayfish than for any herp.

why again just a 5 gallon, you can get a 10 or 20 for dirt cheep, even at yard sales and such. Then you could at least get a couple fire bellies or something.

well here's good news! I may be sharing an apartment with my brother and a few of his friends instead of staying in the dorm. If that's the case then I'd be able to get a larger (much larger) tank. It's just a possibility right now, but a good possibility.
