FW aquarium controller

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is the idea. The thing is that I want it to be what other controllers aren't. That is why we are designing it for freshwater. There aren't really any freshwater controllers and it would be extremely difficult if not impossible for us to compete with saltwater controllers. This is going to be an open source controller, so I am not trying to make a profit off of it. I was considering starting a site dedicated to the controller, but I started a thread on the admin zone and people said to just make the project forum a private forum on Utah Fishkeepers for now. I got banned on the admin zone yesterday.

We decided on using the raspberry pi 3, but now I am almost thinking about reconsidering the pi zero. What model should we use? I think that we should get one more person on the aquarium controller team. Anyone who wants to volunteer, PM me.

So you say you want it to be what other controllers aren't, what are you planning to include that others dont? I get you are aiming for FW with temp and dosing controls, but really is there anything else? There are already cheaper controllers out there. For example-

That'll control the temp. Then they have a module that adds dosing. All that can be found for well under $200. In fact I even gave away the lite unit for free when I upgraded. But they are still super stable and work well.

If you are doing this for fun and the experience then go for it, however if you are doing it because you think many people will end up using it when there are proven, cheap controllers out there that you don't have to build I think you are very mistaken. Just my thoughts, for whatever they are worth.

But it would have less features that even the FW guys would want. Plus people will have to assemble yours themselves as well as upload the programming to it.

And you still haven't told me what else it is going to include? Something else to consider, when you start adding probes the price goes up very quickly. What others have said is true, in this day and age what good is a controller that doesn't alert you if something is wrong? Or at least give you access to the info outside of the house? Mine both emails and texts me when something is off. Just some more food for thought.
