yeah. more on topic, was thinking coarsest prefilter would retain the flow wanted for fx5.
This is probably a different tank than where fry may have occurred anyway. (my memory on that is iffy).

"There are way too many threads with FX5 issues. Leaking, stopping, micro-bubbles and many more, but yet so many people swear by them and recommend them. Fluval have gone downhill just like Marineland. All they are concerned with is profit and thus their products and customers suffer. I would stay away from both manufacturers"
Any canister will suck up fry...I have dug out inch long synodontus petricola out of canisters...
Anyway, a lot of the problem with fx5 is the location of its pump. Located at the water entry, it gets clogged with stuff or worse sand far too often.
Now, one can argue that if people never make mistakes, the filter is great...but a better measurement of design is how well does the design tolerate mistakes. There are certain areas that fx5 is not very robust in that regard.

My thing is as of recent the admins statement is 100% true all you need to do is read english and just go back say three or four months be ready to read for awhile.....yet so many will still not admit what is right (even if its in there face) you can't argue the fact!!! Thats where my issues come in and I have to jump in these threads, new people don't know about these problems. I'm just not a good diplomat you would not want to send me to the Middle East or North Korea as A peacemaker we would be finished

You own one you love it thats your right and freedom of opinion but don't go sending new begineers out there thinking this is the end all especially with all the recent documentation.Maybe we should help Fluval add to the box "Things you might need from the hardware store before setup". The water enters the through another pipe then exits the pipe at the bottom, flows up the sides of the basket walls, over the top of the top basket then makes its way down through the baskets where it then meets the pump. However if you don't have some kind of pads for mechanical in the inner baskets then sand can make its way past the sponges and through the baskets down to the pump.
No...it certainly isn't the end all be all filter but I think people need to determine what their needs are and proceed from there. If you are looking for a high GPH(500+ with media) and current producing filter then it is this or the Eheim 2262. Then there is media capacity. Then price. The list goes on. I have seen many different comparisons of filters and I think there are enough reviews out there that people have to make up their own mind and form their own opinion. I'm getting to old. I need to have been one of those flower childs from the 60's I was still to young
.This is the reason I prefer cans with top mounted pumps. Lotsa sponges and media to clog before clogging the pump can eve be an issue.
Same way with this filter as well. The water is filtered before it reaches the pump. The pump is on the bottom but the water is filtered first. The water exits the pump and immediately leaves the FX5.
