One unit I have had for a couple years another used unit working for over a year with me and its a bit older than my other unit which I can see by the manufacturing date printed into the plastic.

This unit was brand new out of the box with its full warranty now I will admit I am not mechnical but logic tells you that you would what to make darn sure the clamp was tight. On page 7 and 8 for all of you who have a FX5 manual you will see for input and output it says tighten clamps nothing else not tighen three turns or two turns it just says tighten clamps, now if there are sharp edges on the inside of the clamp that diggs into the rubber as you tighen that cannot in any way be the fault of the customer. Then the thing explodes not even twenty minites after you turn it on and floods the room how is that my fault? I didn't file the sharp edges inside the clamp? I worked for many years for a manufacture and if I remember correctly it was the engineer's job to insure the design would not allow failures like this. I as a customer can only follow the instructions and assume they are correct. And then call the company and get treated rudely because I need $40.00 dollars worth of parts to fix the product? I'm sorry thats just bad business and by the way did I say my job was as a customer service manager for years. Had this girl been on my staff she would be packed and out the door for treating a customer like that. Sorry for the ramble this just upsets me. My hopes where that maybe I can help someone avoid the same problem if there is a bad batch out there. I am not saying all FX5's are bad.

Did you say you had to pay return shipping cost?
I think and have stated as much that the FX5 is cheaply made for the price. With cheap plastic parts on the canister itself. It's no wonder that the pump is the only thing with an extended warranty

I allways like them because of their size, i mean they are huge ! About the good up to 400 gallon claim im not to sure about that ! I have mine on a very understocked 180. One dovii.... Nothing beats a sump. I plan on getting a sump for my 300 gallon next summer.

Stop commenting on things you have no idea about, that is called bad information, which you seem to be full of.

1. You don't have a canister or fx5 for that matter
2. You troll everyone's posts
3. No one listens
4. If you owned an fx5 you would know its not cheaply made.

Op,

Obviously hagen doesn't manufacture the metal clamps, they are made by another company, so its not completly fluvals fault.

Sorry to hear this. I'd go with a different company after this!

Regardless of the quality of their products Marineland has hands down the best customer service I've experienced. 'Oh you broke a clamp? They'll be two in the mail for you tomorrow whats your address?'

You know after a couple of days to think about it I don't think my problem is so much with the FX5 itself it's more the bad customer service that I recieved. After all Fluval is a Hagen product which is very popular. I have just always had a big problem with large popular companies thinking that they can provide bad service just because they have plenty of other customers. Countryboy and F1 I hope I in no way caused your disagreement? I just always enjoy having any input to my posts and after all everyone has a right to there opinion on a subject.

Hawk, it is a bummer that your fx5 tubing was destroyed by oem parts. I can empathize with your experience.

IME the fx5 is a great filter. I think the filter straight out of the box as "bare bones". There are a couple of simple upgrades that make them even better. For example, i use 1" vinyl tubing with bulkheads instead of the supplied tubing. Also, matrix is a great media for the baskets--I one clogged an fx-5 using a bag of carbon. FX5 owners have all sorts of tricks to maximize the potential of the filter.

I have 5 currently running on 4 different tanks, bought them all used and have had to do a couple fixes: namely replace a couple of the plastic hex washers and a motor. I keep a few extra clamps and a motor on hand in case of a failure. However, those fixes were cheap and easy to do.
just my 2 cents:)

In my case I had just taken it out of the box had a simple issue with a clamp but still am not completely sure what else may be wrong and was scared to start it up again to find out. I'm not mechnical and living not far from the Yaak in Montana mountains I do not have allot of mentors to fall back on, this is my outlet.

You can trust it if the lid is tight (DIAGONALLY TIGHTEN SO THE LID IS EQUALLY TIGHT) the tubing is tight and all the connections are good it will run like a tank! That is the best part of the fx5!

That does stink u had a bad clamp, wonder is somehow it got bent in s&h?
