Hawk, it is a bummer that your fx5 tubing was destroyed by oem parts. I can empathize with your experience.
IME the fx5 is a great filter. I think the filter straight out of the box as "bare bones". There are a couple of simple upgrades that make them even better. For example, i use 1" vinyl tubing with bulkheads instead of the supplied tubing. Also, matrix is a great media for the baskets--I one clogged an fx-5 using a bag of carbon. FX5 owners have all sorts of tricks to maximize the potential of the filter. I have 5 currently running on 4 different tanks, bought them all used and have had to do a couple fixes: namely replace a couple of the plastic hex washers and a motor. I keep a few extra clamps and a motor on hand in case of a failure.However, those fixes were cheap and easy to do.
