Hey guys it's me again! Sorry I havent been very active. My mother passed away this passed weekend and I've been somewhat a wreck. Besides that. I need help with my 3 fx6 filters.

So I woke up yesterday morning to find 2 of my 3 fx6 canisters were not running. Me worried, decided to jump on in and start figuring out the issue. Upon opening it. The bottom of the fx6 was packed at the bottom with about an inch of sand and clogged the impellers. I cleaned them all out and took apart the impeller and cleaned that also. They're all running like a charm now.

SO my first idea as to what caused this is i purchased 2-3" pawflay air stones with flat bottom to set on the sand on the bottom of the tank. This tank was set up with new sand I've never used before. (Sunset gold by caribsea). Very fine sand. I was having cloudy issues in the tank for a while. But my suspicion is that the stones were stirring up sand really bad essentially constantly filling the fx6s with sand. Upon taking the stones out, the water is now clear as can be and I've had no issues. (Not even 24 hours in)

My question is. Do you think my assumption is correct? Or should I add a prefilter? Lift the intakes up higher? I just want to avoid this. Yes I know that a sump would do a lot better. But I've had these fx6's for a while, they work great and just cant get ahold of a sump right now. Thankyou guys. And as you guys have been asking. Here is a couple pictures also :) (also a picture of the stones and sand) 15845810878245006166482324407273.jpg1584581140216898408814384766318.jpg1584581165657174108135719313736.jpg15845811855763774137243078060660.jpg

Instead of taking the air stones out perhaps simply get them a little platform to sit on that keeps them off the sand.

That's a good idea also. You think that may have been causing my thick cloudy looking tank and me waking up to the fx6s clogged?

I just re read your thread, you are using very fine sand? There's your problem. You need a heavier sand like pool filter sand since everything will knock the sand up into whatever filtration you have if it is super fine, even the fish will do it. What I would do is replace the sand with a heavier sand and I would imagine your problems will stop.

Let's get a second opinion though shall we? duanes duanes

Sorry for your loss,

either go how your going or add the prefilters

or raise up the intakes, Where are they btw?

that’s a lot of filtration for those two

They are like 3ish inches above the sand. And thankyou. I plan to add more fish. But this new sand issue has me worried.

Well it's a lot more fine than the Sand that I had in my previous tank. This is made by the same people (caribsea) but this is sunset gold, last type was torpedo beach.

I have no idea what any of those brands are like as I have not used them so any input I put in about those brands would be pulled out of my ass so I will not pretend like I know what I'm talking about and make any comments about them.

Oh okay. Well what sand do you use? You by chance have a way to share a link?

Pool filter sand. Easy to find, cheap, and it is heavy.
