Gar Advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Get it doc~The bigger of my two gar is probably my favorite fish in the tank right now. Its been ~a month since I picked the pair up, and the larger gar is already acting like a puppy dog when I'm around, begging for treats and following me around while doing tank maintainance. If the little guy could hover, he would probably follow me everywhere, all around the house. As of three days ago he eats pellets--carni-sticks.

Hopefully nobodies dumping fg's in Texas waters. People would never dump fish they don't want in rivers right?! Lol. Well gotta wait till it gets bigger for sure. Time will tell. Plus you guys are prolly better at id'ing gars than me. Nice pick up DrB.

time will not tell if it is a Florida or spotted, DNA test will tho.

Oh and btw I housed, floridas, longnose, tropicals, and a cuban all together with very little issues. once they develop a pecking order there is little issue when space and feeding are taken care of. I was very worried the 30" troos where going to bite my 12" longnose in half like pixi sticks but they had plenty of space and food they never looked twice at them. Each species did often "school" together to use the term loosely as they more hung out and would do their thing... Then do a lap together ect. Keeping 2-3 or more of the same species imo are fascinating to watch.

that's right, gars at the same/similar size get along really well. if you want to get some more gar(which your fish might be a Florida since it was from an LFS), get them at the same size when they are young to avoid aggression. Adult gars don't really care much if you put a new gar into the tank as long as it is not small enough to be swallow.

BTW monster minis, did you lost your old account?

So will I be fine with my footprint to add 2-3 more or would 1-2 be better?

it's depend on how you feel when they get to max size but IMO 2-3 gars would be enough for that tank size.

So what about these guys? The bigger one looks like an alligator so I wknt get that one but the smaller one looks like a Florida or spotted. Any confirmation on that? (I'll post pics below)

Pics aren't showing for some reason I'll try again later when I get home.
