at the end of the day, it's up to the op to decide what he wants to do with his fish. but since he has asked for opinions on the combo, try refraining from blasting points of views that do not fall in line with your own.

Just because my combination works for me, does NOT mean it will work for someone else. I just happen to have a combination, introduced at certain times, that is getting along well. I am completely prepared in case anything gets out of hand or aggression starts to show deteriorating health of fish.

Most of the people advocating against cichlids, catfish, arowana, etc. are doing so out of experience. Have you personally kept all the combination's discussed in this thread? If not, then where do you get the authority to give advice concerning those combination's?

What?! That was nice! I was simply stating that if he hasn't had experience keeping these combination's of fish, then how can he comment on the combination with any authority? If he has, then I guess he can comment on it.

I'm not trying to say that others comments and experiences aren't valid. My main point is that theorizing about how these fish will interact when combined in an aquarium, and experience with how they will ACTUALLY act when combined in an aquarium are two totally different things.

Experience is always a better indicator of how something will play out than a theory of how different fish will interact when placed under confinement and conditions outside of their natural state.

dang exagerate much cichlids and gars even aro and catfish can all live together in hormony as long as they have the space and are all feed acording to they natural habits. its true you might need to provide extra feeders for them if your cichlids are hungry and snatching all feeders befor your gar gets to them but if you have a balenced diet of pallet, frozen, and live. then plump the cichlids with pallet/frozen befor throwing in the live and your gar will get to the live food more often live food should be given in moderation anyway i would let him starve for a bit till he starts eating the pallet/frozen. remember introducing anything living into your tank can result in infections or illnesse so unless you trust your source %100 i would only feed pallet/frozen
id comment, but others seem to have taken care of ur illinformed, zero experience assanign commet.

screamin, dude u need to find a better source of feeders. I have(knock on wood) never had a problem with any sort of infection from feeders. of course iv only gave feeders to my gar but u get my point.

Dam! after reading this , im abit scared to put my F/gar with cichlids(F/Horn). Lucky i read this , my gar and poly's come first. I still have alot time in this life to get a few cichlids. :-)Thanks guys for sharing your experiences

Don't I know it. I am runnung out of space for bins to try to qt them in as well as not likeing the smell much. It was easy when they were cute little fellas with minature appetites. I can no longer even remotely "responsibly" quaranteen the quantity required to feed these growing monsters now. I have thankfully gotten virtually every fish I own that eats live feeders to accept thawed meats.

The Needlefish is the exception!

I have had spotted gars with oscars and severums with no problems. The only problem was if I starved everybody too long then the oscars and severums would get bit by the gars during the night. Other than that they got along fine. Gars can get nippy when they are hungry but they have a most easy disposition most of the time.
