I would stick with other gars, polypterus', african arowana perhaps (will eventually grow too big). All of which are generally recommended as tankmates for gars.

My own gars are housed with larger growing doradid catfish for the most part. Oxydoras, megalodors and pterodoras genuses.

Yeah those fish get too big for my tank. To bad tank mates are pretty limited...

They seem to have been together a long time in this video and they look fine. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xuRMm6Pzj_c

There are compleately different species then you are talking about... which makes a huge difference.. and if you pay attention you will see rips and tears in fins.. not a good sign. but liek we said it's doable.. but no one is going to say 'What a great idea! do it!"

My 13" gar is with 4- Severums 2- Large Bala sharks, and 1 parrot fish ATM. Absolutely no issues...

I had to get rid of a big pleco that harassed my 2 florida gar. After the gar eat, they tend to lay on the bottom for awhile. I didn't have much luck with more aggressive catfish. To be honest, the gar were the ones getting bullied more often than not. But they make great tankmates for most peaceful fish assuming they don't fit in the gars mouth. Btw, their jaws can get around things you wouldn't think would fit in there, good practice is to look at the girth of the tankmates rather than the length.
